Today is a great time to be in the armed forces. The best is yet to come. #MAGA

Now we're talking - Navy is my #1 team.....attend all home games with sons.

And correct - there are so many other great things about the BNU schools.  To tell you the truth - I've never even spoke of their football success because they are privates.  Bottom line is private victories should only count against other privates.  The real successes is the quality of turning boys into men

Though I did love the DBP victories over STA!  (and was shocked)  My thoughts were STA easily because not only did they have more talent but good coaching (for a South FL school).  The coaching left with George Smith however as it was easy to see and still is to this day.  My friends son was on that team and he told me Toal told him "we're going to get a min of one punt block" and they did.  Not only was Toal a great motivator but he was great at finding weaknesses.  He had a great win over SJR while he was at Hackensack where I could see it then

Last time they were ranked # 1 in the nation....then they only beat a Florida team 41-14 and the pollsters didn't like that...hotel was morgue after the game**, you would've thought the LOST 41-14

Jeter did get his 3000 hit that night and it was a HR, so we had that at the bar. Funny I can remember the score and Jeter, but can't remember the name of the team DBP played

I think it was Ft Pierce Central.  The team wasn't even close to top 20 in FL so the FL people bashed DBP for scheduling them and were making  accusations that Toal wanted a cupcake etc which anyone who knows him would know he is the opposite...he looks for challenges.

Fort Pierce was good the year before and then lost a bunch of high level players which is typical for a public.  It would be impossible for Toal to know what they had the upcoming year.   FL is a very deep state and other than a few top teams you it's hard to peg who will be top 10 or top 20 the following year.

The worst example of this  was Manatee.  Manatee beat STA in 2009 (though STA was missing Gio Bernard) when Manatee was absolutely loaded with tons of top flight D1 talent.  This is what prompted Bosco to schedule Manatee b/c the STA game wouldn't line up. Manatee lost some of those guys in 2010 and got clobbered by STA in 2010 but the 2010 team still had much more firepower than Manatee 2011 who Bosco eventually played.  Mike Blakely - one of top TB's in nation and Q Bundrage - led Iowa St and top of Big 10 in receiving yards)  .  BY 2011 Manatee  had no offensive firepower (good defense but no offense).   Anyway, the game was originally supposed to happen in 2010 based on the 2009 victory of STA and then didnt happen until 2011.    People tried to act as if Toal backed away in 2010 - LOL!   It was the opposite - he started talking to them because they had knocked off STA and he couldn't get STA so he thought they were the next best thing.

It goes back to why privates should only play privates.  Yes I know the FL schools get transfers but 99% of the time the kids are in a very close range of a couple schools and many of the Miami schools only have kids from the local neighborhood.  How do I know - I've went on many recruiting trips first hand.

Great points. Agree that DBP was always the favorite vs teams like Prattville and Manatee for the obvious reasons. I get the private/private philosophy, but I still think an uber large public like Allen would be a competitive game for an elite private like SJC, STA, MC and SJB. ET proved this vs DLS.

Yea no doubts - there are one offs.  A big reason the Bergen parochials started going OOS was the blasting they took loacally in my time for beating up on publics,   The Ridgewood coach in the 90's was very outspoken about this (I forgot his name).     He had a quote in The Record that said "My 3 best players are on their team"

lol whatever - no way to fix it.

...and he likes to play in Florida (vs Cinn, where they have so OK chili and a zoo..LOL)

Ft Pierce...ah, ha.....one of the cities that are always on "Cops"....hell towards the end of the game a sheriff's deputy told my wife that we should leave right after the game and not hang around. The next day I was at a convenience store on A1A and some "kooky" people (drugs probably) came in and were behind me on line....I scooted...my spidey sense was going off

Lol.  Yea man - FL has some real rough neighborhoods.  I lived in Miami Beach for a few and when going over the bridge (Overtown, Liberty City, Carol City, Opa Locka) saw some neighborhoods worse than anything I'd ever seen.

These are the areas that produce the talent.  It's similar to what NYC used to be in basketball in that you'll see kinds playing sandlot football all over.  Big difference from NYC is that  the city limits of Miami only have a population of 400,000 and the talent they produce is insane.  And the street cred is all about hard hitting on defense - much more focus on that than great offensive play making.   It's an amazing fooball story - Jimmy Johnson used to always talk about it.

Bingo...sand lot football....thats why you don't see African Americans playing in MLB....no foundation, no equipment, no fields to play at...

Yea I never thought of that.  Baseball also more of a skill than athletic ability (most positions)  Joe D told me he's had some  MLB players who were incredibly unathletic - to the extent you gauge athleticism as

Speed, Strength, Flexibility, Explosiveness, Stamina.   The cool thing about baseball is that you can make the pros with none of these qualities (not saying some of them don't have them) but it's certainly not a prerequisite.  I think the combine testing does a good job gauging raw athletic ability (of course it doesn't mean you'll be good)

Wasnt Barry bonds African american. There are several black players in the MLB and or retired

But, the number of AAs playing baseball has decreased significantly over the decades. Dave Winfield wrote a great book about the issue a few years ago. If you recall, Dave was also drafted in 3 Sports, MLB, NBA, ABA and NFL.

Just saw this article pop - kind of what we were talking about yesterday.  And this is just one little neighborhood.  The city of Miami by itself puts out as much D1 as the state of Jersey and almost as many NFL players ......but the Miami players in the NFL are of a higher caliber/success rate  as a whole.  Belle Glade and Pahokee are just like these MIami neighborhoods.  The bottom line is that someone like a Peppers is just a great player there pretty seen yearly  where here he was like some of kind of second coming.  (Toal said multiple times he was the best talent he's ever seen) I actually think Peppers was overhyped at Michigan - no doubt he's versatile but many in the NFL are starting to claim bust.  Interesting how he "pulled" his hammy in warmups in the Orange Bowl vs Cook

Chuck Johnson.  I love how these coaches think they own a player just because they live in town.  It’s a buyers’ market nowadays, Chuck.

How about you sack up and give these kids a reason to stay?  Schedule the BNUs and OOS.  Stop playing slappies.  No way they’ll do that, though.  Gotta protect the W-L record and have a “state” title patch on your sleeve.

Depending on the school your at you can stay at your local public school and get offers from big time schools

Jordan fuller NVOT OSU

Nd got a kid from demarset

Gonzalez from union city PSU

Knowshon morano Middletown

The #1 player in NJ this year plays for St. Joe's and it's not SJR. It's the other St. Joe's

Westwood had a WR go to Boston college. Nolan was his first name

Piscataway multiple kids went to Rutgers

Etc etc.

I don’t disagree.  All I’m saying is they don’t own the kids.  And these days with the internet everyone knows when Bergen goes to Grayson, etc.  If public coaches wanna keep kids around they have to get with the program and give them a reason to stay.

I agree. The biggest reason to stay is your not shelling out over 10k a year to go to the privates. And your gonna be big fish in small pond. Whereas if you go to privates as good as you are the kid next to you could be as good or better. Now for some kids as we see that next level of competition is great while other thrive in the big fish small pond scenario. Unfortunately the publics will never be good enough to travel and compete against relevant oos schools. Now if NJ does what I have read and combine schools that could get interesting. Combine PV and PH in football for example. It's the same district. There is no reason why every 2 miles in NJ there is another HS.

Agreed.  Or the 2 Northern Valley schools or the Wayne schools (a Wayne Valley-Hills would be very good).
