If you are one of those people

That rely on a tax refund to meet major expenses or pay off debts you had better pray that the shutdown gets resolved soon. The IRS is operating at 12.5% capacity, never mind the fact this year was always going to be trying with the implementation of the new tax laws for the first time. So, those needing tax assistance or their refunds deposited timely, are possibly going to be in a world of hurt!

Not for nothing, but people that are stupid enough to "rely on a tax refund to meet major expenses or pay off debts"  are not going to listen to any financial advise, and they would not even be impacted either...

They all get the money when they file...

... and pay the small % to their tax preparers to get it today!

They get their money before you do....🤣

If there is uncertainty as to when the refund will ever be forthcoming, the preparer will either not advance cash to the filer, or they will ding them for a much larger percentage to the extent the law allows. Either way, if the IRS is not fully operational by the last week of January there are going to be a huge, huge problems. For one, questions that emanate from the new Tax Laws will not get answered. This will result in a lot of filing errors. For another, there will be less cash in the economy during a time when signs are pointing to a slowdown.

In all honesty, putting all questions of politics aside, this is potentially a huge deal.

Trust me on the above.

It depends on how long it drags out and how it is spun.

With that said, currently the IRS is at 12.5% staffing. As such the phones are not being answered and refunds will not be processed unless the shutdown is resolved or unless there is some other work around to staff the this agency back to full capacity very soon.

If things stay as they are, it will create chaos for individuals that prepare taxes professionally.

I don't think many of them are even aware of this issue yet.

One other thing I will add. I sure as hell would not want to be an employee of this agency this year!

You said until the last week of January (until major clustrfk)….

As this all can be resolved in the time of a couple 'yes votes'...

I'm not to sure I'd run around like chicken little jus yet.

You think these people are really going to be able to hold out that long?...

The actors involved lead me to think that there is close to a 50% chance it may not be resolved. The thing is, under normal circumstances, filers can usually file in late January; but the IRS could end up delaying this. Also, many payroll filings are due at the IRS from companies no later than the end of January (e.g. W-2s and the related IRS package forms). Forms 1099 and related IRS summaries are due shortly thereafter.

I am just somewhat concerned that this will end up being ignored in the political process. As an individual that spent a good chunk of his professional career in the USA with a large CPA firm (I was not on the tax side, though I have a decent amount of tax knowledge), I guess I am just more sensitive to the issues that could arise from this.

Not stupidity but necessity.

His statement is part of the problem with America. Those that rule us are as detached as he is. They don't realize that many decisions are made out of desperation and not ignorance.

In the end, I don't think we end up somewhere pretty.

Borrowing is not a requirement, and even more stupid if you do not have the money to pay.

The only requirement you have to never go broke in life, is never to live beyond your means...

That most do not recognize this, and that most attempt to live beyond their means....

is definitely not necessity..it is stupidity...

It is essential that they get paid.

They too are human and and have needs just as you do.

I would think in most countries those that are in charge of collecting and administering the Federal Revenue process would be considered essential. But here not so much ... welcome to $22 trillion and counting bequeathed us by members of congress and the executive branch of both parties.

That sentence assumes that everyone earns enough to live within their means. This, particularly today, is not the case for many that hold a full time job.

Blaming stupidity on desperation and yet claiming non-ignorance?  LOLOL

So if you know it's wrong and yet you do it anyway....it is now the governments fault....

What was it you said about "part of the problem with America"? 🤣

If you hold a full time job...even at minimum wage...

you may not like the lifestyle it affords (and thus try to 'borrow' out of it), but what in the world makes you think you will die in the street?

You won't...

unless you truly are stupid....

When too many 'non-essentials' rely on Government checks for their needs....this shit can happen...

Consider yourself lucky...

In private industry you would be  pink slipped...

….and NOT retroactively paid ….for your 'no work' vacation....

If you hold a full time job at minimum wage and have no other source of income you would die in the streets. The same would even apply in Atlanta or Miami let alone NYC. And you know that so quit the BS. You are not an ignorant troll like @Drummer61

Most people rely on their paychecks to meet their needs.  Non essential doesn’t mean their job is not important.  That is a false belief being thrown around.

Federal contractors are also impacted and aren’t retroactively paid, some will be pink slipped too.

You got it wrong...

I'm not blaming the people....I'm blaming the decision...

and telling people so they can learn it as well.

You seem to promote bad decisions...and then try to explain them away as 'givens'...

of course, not of your own doing....

Yes I agree LOLOL....

But you wouldn't expect me to debate it leading in terms that are favorable to the opponent.... would you? 😐

Good that you brought 'balance'....haha

Gee that's a funny statement considering there are a couple thousand people doing it (many with no jobs at all) within a couple block radius of my house. you know, in the NYC suburb...

Like I said …..You may not LIKE the lifestyle....
