Has anyone here ever been to Russia?

Went over there during my powerlifiting days in late 90's.  Moscow.  A group of us went to compete in an international competition.  The US sponsor who paid for our plane tix and hotel for 4 nights tried to feed us basically just Spam, as meals were suppose to be included.  Lol.  3 of the guys got sick, they did not have much cash so they had to survive on the Spam, and missed their first lift in the bench portion.  Lol.  Me and a few other guys looked at the Spam and said, hell no, we will gladly pay for our own food.

I know some who plan to retire there.  The Chump family and friends.  Their family compound is currently being built and the builders have been asked to speed it up since its looking  like they may be retiring there much sooner than expected.

I heard he plans to take up archaeology and move to Minnesota so he can explore the Aztec ruins there.

Russia is the pinnacle of competitive powerlifting. Was the food over there any good?

Never been.

But my best friend and his wife are both at least part Russian (she and her family came over only shortly before the CCCP fell and speaks it fluently).

They went back together a few years ago.  From what they saw in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and whatever shtetls their families originally emigrated from, they said there is a lot to like if you have money  but they saw a lot of poverty and a lot of old poor people just lying in the streets (sick, hungry, etc).  I remember they both were upset telling me about trying to get help for one old lady and people just walking past them.

It wasn’t dangerous there or anything and I think they ate well, enjoyed seeing the sights (they really liked St. Petersburg), etc.  But all of their family who stayed said they wished they had left either to Israel or the US when it all came down.

I don’t think they’re going back any time soon.

Where.  That was a half a lifetime ago.  I competed at 181lbs and had a bench of ~512.  Cant recall exactly,  Deadlift ~625 and squated ~675.  I would have to go back into my boxes of stuff where I kept all my logs and paperwork.  Did not do well in Russia.  My diet was completely thrown out of whack since the sponsor lied about our meals.

The food was for shit.  For those of us who brought some cash, we had to eat pretty much fast food.  And yeah, the powerlifters there were no joke.  The Russians no doubt wanted to show off what they had.  Although they were not clean, but stupid strong.  Some looked so abnormal due to the roids.  I was not 100% clean, took some stuff, but not anabolic.

I was gonna try to one-up you, but I don't think it's gonna work.

I benched 315 toward the end of the summer in which I turned 16. I weighed about 165 lbs. I guess I was pretty proud of it back then. Me and few friends found a program in a magazine that guaranteed to increase your bench press by 50 pounds. We went at it with a lot of energy. It was fun because there would be these 1 rep max tests every week or so that would determine your workout for the following week. So there was always a test to look forward to.

I never got into lifting heavy again. I found that it was too difficult to lift heavy and to do other sports at the same time. I probably just didn't know how to do it right. But I've been thinking about getting into it again. I was thinking that it's something I could do on my own in my garage that would still be in a way competitive.

I don't know. I don't know how well 1 rep maxes would work on my own in the garage. I'd probably end up killing myself.

Good shit.  I was always naturally strong, but never did and competitions until after baseball was over.  In my senior year of high school I did 375.  But I needed the feeling of competition, so our strength coach in high school turned me on to powerlifiting.  I loved seeing the gains after a few months of really being dedicated to it, from eating schedule to lifting twice a day to hit different spots.  I get what you mean about the max day feeling.  I had a couple friends who were not competing, but were my lifting partners until I joined a regional lifting team call The Iron Society.  But it was way more fun with my friends.  One was 6'8 and weighed like maybe 190.  He was a pitcher that was drafted by the Astros.  And the other guy was a 5'6 150lb half filipino half white dude.  The filipino was way stronger than my other buddy. Lol.  Yup good times.  I have thought about doing it again, but everytime I get to my shoulder workouts, I can't last.  No rotator cuff left thanks to baseball.

Damn brother, that is impressive.  That puts my knitting championship days to shame.  Lol

Btw, I knitted in the 205 lb classification.

Very impressive numbers. Would it be impossible for me to break the raw bench SHW record even thought I’m not 6’6” (painful to say) and 400 pounds?

I want to start competing,  but I don’t feel I’m strong enough. There are many feats I want under my belt before I join a federation.

Save it for the excuse thread.
