My Thoughts on Mater Dei

I think they deserve all the hype given to them, and dare I say even a pre-season number #1-5 ranking. However, a few things concern me regarding their hype.

They return 10 out of 11 players on offense, sure.

But their defensive line and secondaries get wiped from graduation. Nobody is talking about this, but MD's lone blemish came about because their defensive line got mauled by SJB. Now, take into the fact their defensive-line that got mauled graduates 3 of their 4 starters and I believe 4 of their starting secondary graduate as well.

In 2010, that might be a problem

in 2017, they can freely scour OC to fill any gaps they have with future BCS players

i think SJB and MD are both top 5 preseason teams

CC and DLS a tier below most likely -- DLS's schedule says the coach believes he has a team, but at least one pseudo-insider that ought to know thinks he may have overreached

CC offense seems like it won't miss a beat so I would have them right up there with MD.  What does SJB return on the lines?

I don't pay attention as much as I used to -- a). Kids older/ life evolving b) it doesn't matter who "returns" to top SoCal teams anymore -- recruiting is basically free and open (very different than NorCal and SBG results have tilted back toward SoCal since change) -- different governing bodies

SJB reloads (and is located in prime recruiting area)

Mater Dei reloads (and has Best player in country)

CC reloads a team that should have beat IMG last year

formidable trio

My thoughts on Mater Dei.....

They don't play any quality OOS competition.

Where's Nolebull?

MD plays a better SOS every year than any team ever has in the history of GA hsfb

yeah they don't play OOS but let's put that in context

Mater Dei will always play great defense.  That is our tradition.  We have some fine young players that would have started at any other school, but were relegated to the bench due to our outstanding Senior class last year.

Our defense will feature 7+ seniors (which is key) including two fine (4*) senior LB'ers who have decided to transfer to our fine institution in order to realize a fine Catholic education

I can't even talk about our offense without feeling faint with excitement.  This old heart can't take this kind of palpitations.

Even so, our schedule will be brutal.

Bergen Catholic is going to come out west and punch us in the mouth.

SJB is going to pound us behind their 400lb Burrito Brothers line.

Cen10 will be boat racing everyone including IMG

Bishop Gorman has no weakness that we can find.

Trinity League will be fierce as usual, with everyone going for our jugular each week.

But it will all be worth it if we can get our hands on DLS.  We will wring their scrawny necks.....finally.

Oh No Sir....

You HAFTA play an extraoidinary OOS schedule to be considered elite.  I have that on the best of authority.

The Left tackle has to get better against good defensive ends.  SJB came at him hard both games and he gave up a ton of pressure.

With all due respect Coach Shillinglaw, if MD doesn't beat BC worse than SJB beat SPP, you're in for a loooong season.

We've been watching film on Bergen Catholic and here are our take aways.

Coach Nunzio will have his troops extremely prepared for the 3 stripes.

Bergen Catholic plays a stifling defense holding 8 of 11 opponents to 17 points or less

BC was ranked in the National Top 25 last year at one point.

BC handed a very fine Paramus Catholic team one of their only two losses.

BC has a prolific QB with a rifle arm

BC plays in one of (if not the top) the Top leagues in the Country.

NJ schools travel well and have a winning OOS record on the road.

Make no mistake.  We will be fortunate to keep this one close and stay within a TD in order to pull out a win.

I scheduled BC to get my young Lions better prepared for the Pac 5 playoffs than we were last year.  Even if we lose, we will be better for it.

Coach S,

Are you sure you're not watching film from the 2015 season? In 2016, their QB was injured and was a non-factor for most of the season. And their conference record was 1-3. Lost to a 6-5 DBP team and should've lost to Pool B Pope John, who's scheduled to play powerhouse Lake Gibson FL next season. I'll fwd you their 2016 film if u like. Hope this helps.

There is no shame in losing a big game to DBP.  Even in Calif we know that DBP is the most dangerous single game opponent in America.  Coach Toal is one of the great big game schemeing coaches in HS football history.

Make no mistake.  BC is going to be a beast when they arrive in So Cal.  Even my notorious Orange County refs may not be enough.

Remember, SJB put up 56 on SPP in 2015. IF BC holds your Crusaders under that number, it'll be a "win" for the other Crusader team either way.

We are the Monarchs not Crusaders.

Our cheerleaders say..."Go, go, go....go you mighty Monarchs.... Migh-ty Monarchs".

If you attend the game, you will know what I'm saying.

Monarchs, Crusaders, it doesn't matter. You're still going to win by a lot!! If not, your season will be considered a total failure.

It does matter.  It also matters that we have three stripes on our helmet, not one or two or four.

The three stripes represent: Pride, Poise, Courage.

Our season will only be a failure if we don't get DLS and beat them badly in the SBG game.

BC sin/loss is irrelevant to our season goals, other than to prepare us for Trinity league and the playoffs.  We will "play a lot of guys" vs BC to get a feel for how they will respond in game situations.  I may even rest JD a bit to see how my other QB's will fare in real time situations.

In fact, I hope they make us sweat to teach my team that we need to play 48 minutes and we can't take plays off.
