Superbowl Weekend

I know. The Super Bowl was a couple of weeks ago, and the Chiefs the big winner, but ..

The Daytona 500 amounts to what is the NASCAR Cup Series super bowl, albeit at the beginning of the season. There simply isn't a more anticipated race for NASCAR fans.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.charlotteobserver.com/sports/nascar-auto-racing/thatsracin/article240258386.html

I've been a pretty avid round track racing fan for more than two decades, attending numerous dirt track and asphalt track races all the way from little local points series to the top of the line Cup Series in their largest and most well known venues. Of course today, I'll be planted in front of a screen somewhere to take in this event.

Well, having said that, there was another motorsports super bowl this weekend. Lights Out at South Georgia Motorsports Park is at the forefront of radial/small tire drag racing. This race is definitely the super bowl for the small tire classes with a lot of talented tuners and drivers making the trip from all over the country.  From the back roads and racing underground with local grudge matches and real life street outlaw racing with large amounts of money changing hands in betting on the races, these small tire series have grown and motorsports are better for it.

https://dragillustrated.com/the-oral-history-of-lights-out-how-the-night-the-lights-went-out-in-georgia-became-the-super-bowl-of-small-tire-racing/

I've made a point of going to the Lights Out race all but 3 of it's 11 year history. Seen it go from a $60 weekend slip right against the track where you could park and tailgate for the entire weekend and hardly anyone be there at all, to a standing room only event where the slips by the track are sold out up to a year in advance.

This year it was mired by rain so a lot of the action got condensed into a two day event between Friday and Saturday, making one of the most action packed events I've ever attended.

Near record speeds were laid down in spite of losing the track on Thursday night for rain. And, sure to be one of the most talked about runs of the season is sure to be Marcus Birt's flight down the track that apparently had plenty of grip for those that knew how to tune their chassis for the conditions.

I have my own personal video of it from directly across from the light tree, and of course all of the drag race media coverage crews have posted videos as well. I'll share mine and then the Drag Illustrated story complete with videos and replays while I wait for Free Life Films documentary.

Pretty sure he had to clean out his fire suit after that ride. Amazing save in a very dangerous situation where so many things could have happened to make that much worse than it was.

The SpeedVideo live feed replays in that article were awesome. The coverage of this event is pretty much second to none.

I guess for anyone that read this far, maybe you'd be interested in the event finals sheet showing the class champions and their times/speeds. Stevie "Fast" Jackson shows how strong a tuner/driver he is again in this even, not only tuning the Marcus Birt car that went air born, but piloting the RVW championship winning car himself for the second time in three years.

Landed in Daytona about a half hour ago. Will be the first president to ever give the start commands for the 500. I was there when W did a flyover in Air Force one and gave the commands for the 400.

There should be video of the Air Force One low altitude pass over the track somewhere already. Lemme see if I can find it.

Much better video from varying angles in the Drag Illustrated article.  Of course they cut it off before showing the emergency response and exit from the vehicle, etc.

In one of the angles on the speed video live feed, look at the video crew standing on ladders right beside the air born car. These guys are crazy as hell. Didn't even flinch. Hahaha.

Stevie Fast won by .003.

X275 cars low 4.20s.

Biggest drag race of the year.

I wonder why so many cars go airborne at SGMP?

Sooo much grip. Man the track is ridiculous. This year the crowd was just a little down due to weather concerns I'm guessing. Donald Duck Long also pissed off many of the local fans speaking out against the "dirty" Cook County law enforcement.

I have to say, this is one of the few large events I've ever been to where there isn't any police presence to speak of. At least not uniformed visible officers. I'm guessing that has a lot to do with some of Duck X's commentary about them.

Heard they had to pay a 10k dollar fine for breaking the sound ordinance curfew last night to get all the racing in and avoid the rain today.

It hurt him a little this year in local attendance numbers, but, the vacationers from all over the country still are making the trip. I hung out Friday and Saturday with a group from North Carolina, the Carolina N/T crowd from the 710, home of the 910 No Prep Cash Days.

They had good moonshine too.  Some sneaky strawberry flavored stuff in a mason jar. Way too smooth.

http://710dragway.com/events/dig-or-die-no-prep-910-spring-cash-days/

This drag race crowd is pretty much outlaw based anyway. These aren't the usual NHRA type fans. This type of fan is just as likely to be found gambling on a back road street race out in the countryside somewhere as they are to be out in the mainstream.

Duck X knows what he's doing. Just keeping it edgy I think, so as to not turn off the real base while coming into the mainstream with the show.

You missed some great racing and fun bro.

I'm not a grand stand type fan for these races, so, I'm hanging over on the driver's side where all the "action" is. These cats will gamble on anything. xD

There is always an extended track prep session between the LDR and RVW runs, so, these guys were paying dudes to run foot races. Hahaha. I watched a college kid from Georgia Southern make 300 bucks outright on Friday night at 100 bucks a race. Ran barefoot on asphalt. Probably an easy 1 to 2k being bet on each race in side bets. Kid won three races back to back against 3 different guys.

They were dropping lighters for 20 bucks, the money went to whoever guesses which end would be pointing which way correctly or when enough people played whichever player the chrome end pointed to took the pot.

Shell games and three card monte hustlers.

I may or may not have been involved in some of the gambling. I also may or may not have won some and lost some on the drag races.

Lights out always out draws NHRA.

It's the best show in racing period.

This event is like no other in motorsports imo.

The venue isn't as large as a Talladega or Daytona, so, they may never have 100k butts in the seats at one time, but, the atmosphere will rival pretty much anything. Interesting dynamics with a very knowledgeable fan base as well. The lesser series run and a lot of folks kind of fade back to their motor homes and cars or shopping, and then tighten back up as the X275 and Limited series run, then you get crushed for the RVW as everyone anywhere on the grounds is back to the stands and fences.

Very exciting form of racing and all of the side stuff adds an element as well.
