The common flu didn’t totally shut down much of China, close schools in northern Italy or threaten materials delivery to countless American factories (auto, pharmaceutical, steel, etc.). One example: if you depend on a particular medicine (I.e. blood pressure) you must know that a significant number of the raw ingredients come from China. Much of this has stopped. Check with your doctor and while prescriptions are still available stock up with a 90 day supply if you can. One real example out of many. Not saying it is the same or worse than the flu, but anything messing with your RNA is never good. A Novel Coronavirus from Patients with Pneumonia in China, 2019 List of authors. A previously unknown betacoronavirus was discovered through the use of unbiased sequencing in samples from patients with pneumonia. Human airway epithelial cells were used to isolate a novel coronavirus, named 2019-nCoV, which formed a clade within the subgenus sarbecovirus, Orthocoronavirinae subfamily. Different from both MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV, 2019-nCoV is the seventh member of the family of coronaviruses that infect humans. Enhanced surveillance and further investigation are ongoing. (Funded by the National Key Research and Development Program of China and the National Major Project for Control and Prevention of Infectious Disease in China.) Emerging and reemerging pathogens are global challenges for public health.1 Coronaviruses are enveloped RNA viruses that are distributed broadly among humans, other mammals, and birds and that cause respiratory, enteric, hepatic, and neurologic diseases.2,3 Six coronavirus species are known to cause human disease.4 Four viruses — 229E, OC43, NL63, and HKU1 — are prevalent and typically cause common cold symptoms in immunocompetent individuals.4 The two other strains — severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) — are zoonotic in origin and have been linked to sometimes fatal illness.5 SARS-CoV was the causal agent of the severe acute respiratory syndrome outbreaks in 2002 and 2003 in Guangdong Province, China.6-8MERS-CoV was the pathogen responsible for severe respiratory disease outbreaks in 2012 in the Middle East.9 Given the high prevalence and wide distribution of coronaviruses, the large genetic diversity and frequent recombination of their genomes, and increasing human–animal interface activities, novel coronaviruses are likely to emerge periodically in humans owing to frequent cross-species infections and occasional spillover events.5,10 https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2001017 I suggest reading this article... Why are you not more concerned with that? My wife and I have received flu shots every year for more than 20. At least there is s vaccine; the coronavirus vaccine is a year + away. Also, currently the rate of death for the common flu is approximately .1% or less. Thus far the coronovirus seems to be 2.0%+.. It is also suspected that the actual symptoms manifest themself more intensely. While it is possible (but not known yet) that the coronavirus may be easier to transmit yet more research needs to be done on this.
Cat_Scratch
Seasonal flu kills 291,000 to 646,000 people worldwide each year, according to a new estimate that's higher than the previous one of 250,000 to 500,000 deaths a year. The new figures from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other groups were published Dec. 13 in The Lancet medical journal. The updated numbers, which do not include deaths during flu pandemics, are based on more recent data from a larger and more diverse group of countries than the previous estimate, the CDC said. The data came from 33 countries that have 57 percent of the world's population and had seasonal flu numbers for a minimum of four years between 1999 and 2015. That information was used to create an estimate of flu-related respiratory deaths in 185 countries worldwide. The study found that the risk of flu-related death was highest in the poorest regions of the world and among older adults. "These findings remind us of the seriousness of flu and that flu prevention should really be a global priority," study co-author Dr. Joe Bresee, associate director for global health in CDC's Influenza Division, said in a CDC news release. Cat_Scratch
Human trials testing a potential vaccine for the COVID-19 coronavirus are expected to begin in six weeks, U.S. health officials announced Tuesday. “We are on time at least and maybe even a little bit better,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services, told reporters at a press conference. “Hopefully, no further glitches.” The White House reportedly asked Congress on Monday for $1.25 billion in additional funding to bolster its coronavirus response, including money to develop a vaccine and therapeutics to treat the virus. The National Institutes of Health has been working with biotech company Moderna to develop a vaccine using the current strain of the coronavirus. A mask is not necessarily going to protect you. Washing your hands is more important. As of now, this is understood to be transmitted via droplet or contact of the droplets. So, a mask will keep these droplets from spreading if you are already sick, but it won't keep them from getting on you. If it eventually is determined to be airborne, a mask STILL will not protect the wearer as the airborne particles are small enough to pass through the woven fabric of the mask. An N95 will offer more protection, but those need to be custom fitted and buying one OTC could end up doing more harm than good (especially if the wearer thinks they are safe, therefore taking less caution). A PABR would be the safer choice, but who is going to walk around wearing a respirator? The human body is interesting; its water proof and washable. Avoid unnecessary contact, cover your coughs and sneezes, don't touch your face and use hand sanitizer along with hand washing throughout the day. If you are at work in an office, wipe down surfaces before touching. All of those are safer options than walking around wearing a mask.
HawgGoneIt
We always see the same standard rope a dope with this crowd. Look at the flu! Don't worry about this new corona virus thing. It's fucking silly as hell. We are and have become accustomed to the flu, but, this new corona virus is new and potentially has a higher death rate. It definitely deserves honest coverage and to be paid attention to. This one is different from the flu because it doesn't require the host to be presenting with symptoms to be spread. The flu generally is spread only when there is active symptoms like fever. This at least gives others some warning, and sensible folks that have a fever and body aches don't generally go out into the public spreading the bug. If you don't yet feel bad, how do you know to stay home and not risk spreading the bug? The answer is, you don't. This is what is most concerning about this new corona virus. Down playing it is not the correct course of action to protect people from getting it. Of course there are reports out there that it could mutate and potentially cause no symptoms. It can't be ignored the Iranian deputy health minister about to pass out from the bug standing out there preaching about how small the threat is. Lol. If that isn't a wake up call for the numb nuts and nit wits, there can't be one.

Public toilets etc... must be wiped or you risk MRSA... which in my opinion is a greater risk than many of the other diseases.

Hey, we only lost trillions of dollars on a flu bug that has killed how many people in US with 350 million people. Wonder how many the common flu has killed in the same time? Nothing to see here, it’s a great thing that the market has crashed.
