Alabama closes all schools for 3 weeks maybe longer.

Not to sound cynical, but influenza has killed an estimated 8,000 people in the US over the last couple of months with a total of 36 million illnesses.

I can understand the concern, but now we have reached the point of causing hysteria. I say we just postpone life until a treatment and vaccine is available. No work, no school, no bills to pay. Close the grocery stores and restaurants, close all factories, cancel church...

One of the downfalls of a capitalist country no matter who says what at the end of the day people will put money first unless things hit them directly.

Idk. These things teeter on the edge of belonging on the OT section really, but, I understand a lot of posters don't venture over there, so, let's try to let this one ride.

I posted this on the OT section. I wish people would actually watch it, then they can understand why there is so much concern above and beyond the flu, which is what people want to keep comparing this to when it's a totally different virus with different infection rate and death rate.

Just because this hasn't "popped" yet, doesn't mean it won't and we shouldn't be taking these actions to protect the health care system in this country, which will ultimately save lives.

The first 45 minutes or so of this pod cast are extremely informative. You can likely learn more from this podcast about this covid-19 virus and outbreak than you've learned from all sources put together since it first emerged.

The gentleman explains how closing schools could be a mistake in the long run as well which certainly fits this topic perfectly.

People are only hysterical because they aren't well informed.

Second.  Listened to this one yesterday; it was very interesting and informative.

Mortality rate much higher with CV.  Not to  mention not all is known about this virus.

I read where Texas researchers had a vaccine in 2016 but were unable to raise enough money for human trials. The media may not be telling you what is known about the virus. Coronaviruses are nothing new, and each strand is very similar to the others.

We won't be hearing anything else about this awful virus 6 months from now.

I certainly hope so.  I had to attend Mass today via Facebook live and every store and Costco is packed to the gills.  Shelves are almost empty in them too.

While we are bullshitting, I read a story somewhere in my self-educating this morning (won't get into why self educating is necessary right now, nor why there is a panic at stores) anyway, apparently Israel claims to have what they think is a potential vaccine, but, it hasn't even made animal trials yet.

I don't want to turn this topic bad, but, the misconception that corona viruses are the same is completely wrong. If it was correct, the flu vaccine would work every single time against the flu and also against this particular strain as well.

It's totally untrue that one vaccine would work against all strains of corona viruses.

I don't believe that one vaccine is a cure all, but the different coronaviruses are similar enough genetically to find a vaccine rather quickly. Testing, approving, and mass manufacturing will take longer than actually creating the vaccine itself.

I'm of the thought that the huge increase in documented cases is a result of more people being tested due to the current panic created. Months ago people thought they were just sick with a common illness and treated themselves with over the counter medications. 90% of people are being treated this way now with only the most severe cases needing hospitalization.

I bet Johnson&Johnson and P&G certainly appreciate the current hysteria being created though. #cha-ching

Idk. All we have is certain info. Epidemiologists say they think this thing jumped from a pangolin to a human in November, and then til now, we've gotten this.

Nobody knows what to believe because hardly anyone with any authority is being frank and honest.

Hell, I'm scrounging around Chinese and Korean newspaper articles to find any real information. That's a damned shame.

If we're being honest, there has been some type of respiratory stuff going around in south Georgia since last spring. Whether that is related to this or not, who knows?

It must be different because that's all "they're" telling us.
