Do you think HS sports will resume in the fall?

I was reading a few comments on the TXHSFB board and the question came up do we think HSFB will resume in the fall?  Lots of interesting opinions.  Several felt if there wasn’t a vaccine ready many superintendents wouldn’t want to be the ones to resume normal routines.

I’m not sure what I think yet, what are your thoughts?

I doubt very very seriously there will be high school 🏈  this year...

It's just a reality.

As I posted in the other thread I'm recently back from several months working in Italy (several months earlier than I planned on returning). If you look at the figures Italy is pretty much the U.S. two weeks from now so I'm pretty confident in how things will develop. If people aren't idiots right now, stay at home and listen to the government, we should be back to normal by June. If not, I could see this dragging into August/September.

Where I’ve traveled in Texas recently people are still idiots (Dallas, ft worth and Austin) I’m not sure about the rest of the country.

right now I’m not too optimistic our countrymen will do the right thing

Pretty sure they’re idiots in all 50 states.

Well what I saw this past weekend wasn’t a few. Honestly it was business as usual and still is in my town.  Kids are giddy about being out for 2 weeks for SB they’re all out in restaurants, stores, you name it.

Yeah I’m not an alarmist, but it’s going to be awhile until we are back to normal. I don’t see schools going back for the rest of the year and this will creep into the spring or longer.

Just depends on what people decide to do. My county is going shelter in place tonight at midnight for the next 3 weeks. I’m good with it.

It got to a point in Italy right before I left where they essentially put the country under martial law. It was only acceptable to leave your home to shop for essentials, for health reasons or for unavoidable work appointments. You had to fill out an official document for every trip out of your home detailing where you were going and why. There were military and police checkpoints/roadblocks on all major roads and in metro and train stations. They would stop you and check your papers and if they were incorrect or you lied about your purpose it was a 1,000 Euro fine and/or 3 months in jail.

Bingo!  And that’s the reason S Korea and Italy have been able to bring their numbers under control, they didn’t wave a magic wand, it was through strict policy, enforcement and the citizens complying.

IMO we aren’t there yet and shouldn’t automatically expect Italy’s results without the required compliance to guidelines and policies.

That's what will cause this to continue to get out of hand.  Luckily in my area people are very much taking it serious.  Sucks my gym is closed, but push ups and sit ups along with a nice long run will have to do for now.  Everybody here is doing the "shelter in place" thing.  Employers have been very helpful in allowing folks to work from home.  Grocery stores are pretty much out of a lot of the essentials.  If the rest of the country does not take it serious before there is a vaccine, there will not be any fall sports.

Sometimes the powers that be need to protect people from themselves.  This is one of those times.

I think the Italians realized they messed up badly with how slow they reacted in the northern part of the country, especially in Lombardy (Milan's region) where the numbers there still account for 1/2 of all infections and 2/3 of all deaths. In Rome, the lockdown seems to be working. In all of Lazio, Rome's region, there are less than 600 cases and 30 deaths among a population of 6 million.

Unfortunately I think it'll take a region of the US getting Lombardy bad (NYC looking like a good candidate right now sadly) before people treat it with appropriate seriousness. Unfortunately both Italy and the US have a large number of high risk people as well. Italy has the 2nd oldest average population in the world and a huge proportion of the population are smokers. Coupled with the north of the country having the worst pollution in Western Europe and you get a hot bed for high risk cases. In the US you have a lot of respiratory problems coupled with obesity/diabetes which is a significant risk factor for the virus becoming severe as well.

Yep, in Westchester County, NY over here and things are not looking great at the moment even for Fall sports.

Even with the basketball season cut short at least they named a local kid NY state player of the year at least.

Not in mass as I’ve seen here lately.  It’s disappointing, not complying, greedily hoarding goods and supplies.  This has been an ugly look

I saw all this coming and was in the supermarket 2 weeks ago and did not buy anything extra. I did not want to be "one of those."

Now, will I be able to get what I need?

I'll get by, I am not worried. It's just annoying... pisses me off. Not that I did not buy, because others have been such pigs.

I am seriously considering breaking out the guns though. How ridiculous is it that I even need to consider this?

The amount of life lost and lives ruined as an affect of the virus will be higher, IMO, than actual life lost because of the virus.

Look at Italy and South Korea and their numbers. The USA is further ahead medically  than both of those countries. Our mortality rate won’t be 1%.

Sadly there will be people who die directly because of the virus, but factor in how many lives and families that will ruined financially because of the virus and it’s not going to be close.

We made the decision to shut our VFW post down because of the virus and for many that place keeps them alive! It’s their only form of a social life and camaraderie and in many cases is the only time those folks leave the house. So don’t act like you’ve got the Fucking market cornered on the only affects of this deal.

And fuck you bitch!

you are despicable

they closed your VFW and you would rather others die than lose your social  club

how you had the ball to write that was.... despicable.

You let us all know when someone dies from "lack of social club."
