OOS Records that are hard to explain

States Head to Head 2003-Present

This is a link to a Calpreps page that shows you OOS Records for all states in the MaxPreps era. There's some oddities in there. Really random matchups you never even knew happened and some states with crazy records against other states that you never would have guessed. Figured picking through it was a decent way to pass the time in quarantine. Here's Maryland for example:

Undefeated (21-0) against 8 states:

- Alabama (7-0)

- Louisiana (6-0)

- Mississippi (2-0)

- Tennessee (2-0)

- Colorado (1-0)

- Illinois (1-0)

- Oklahoma (1-0)

- Utah (1-0)

Winning record against 12 states plus D.C.:

- D.C. (505-281-1)

- Virginia (473-279-1)

- West Virginia (240-196)

- Pennsylvania (187-127)

- Florida (23-5)

- Texas (11-6)

- California (6-5)

- North Carolina (8-2)

- Indiana (7-1)

- Georgia (5-2)

- Kansas (3-2)

- Missouri (3-1)

- South Carolina (3-1)

.500 (14-14) against 2 states:

- New York (12-12)

- Connecticut (2-2)

Losing record against 4 states:

- Delaware (133-150-1)

- New Jersey (16-26)

- Ohio (9-13)

- Massachusetts (1-4)

Winless (0-2) against 1 state:

- Nevada (0-2)

So Maryland teams have played teams from 27 different states and D.C. with winning records against 20 of them. The oddity is that they have winning records against all the Southern/Western powerhouse states but can't muster a better than .500 record against NY, CT or Mass.

It’s because the only teams that leave the region or powers are the DMV powerhouses.

The no name teams usually stay close to home with random ass matchups.

Georgia for example is like 50 or 60 games UNDER .500 combined against Alabama and North Carolina in that same time frame. But the reality is top GA teams would beat top AL and NC like rented mules down the line.

Its because of the random no name teams

Page isn't loading for me. How many of those wins against power states are Maryland School for the Deaf?

They and the home school teams account for pretty much every weird result on that list.

Gilman has the lone win over Colorado. The only really solid trend against the power states is that MD dominates FL in pretty much all matchups for whatever reason.

The Mass results were mostly caused by MSJ getting spanked twice by St. John's Danvers when MSJ sucked and then Dunbar lost to Mansfield a few years back.

Linganore is the only public school to play someone from a power state out of the immediate region. They lost to Bonita Vista from CA in 2004.

Maryland didn’t dominate Florida. The majority of those wins are Maryland Deaf and the best Maryland teams against garbage Florida teams. There were some solid wins, but no domination.

6 of the 23 wins were from the Maryland Deaf team.

5 of the wins were St Frances Academy and 4 of those were last year as a recruited up all star team. The other they played a team not in the state top 100

Multiple times there was lopsided competition. Archbishop Spalding twice against Bishop Moore, Dematha against Godby, GC vs Immokalee, Eastern Christian against Mad County and Champagnat, St Mary Ryken vs East Ridge.

Thats 7 more. So 18 of the 23 are either deaf schools, or great Maryland teams playing inferior Florida teams
