List your top 5 SEC football coaches since Coach Bryant

This was brought up on another board just asking because we have the smartest poster on the Net.

Mine

1. Saban 6 NC

2. Spurrier 1 NC

3. Meyer 2 NC

4. Stallings 1 NC

5. Fulmer 1 NC

Tough after the first 3.

Spurrier probably cost Fulmer 2 more chances at a NC.

Spurrier cost Alabama a chance in 1994. Bama went 12-1 only loss was a 24-23 in the Sec title. Florida pulled off a trick play very late to set up a the game winning td. Very miserable loss.

Saban* - struggles when playing teams of equal talent except when the are coached by one of his ex assistants. I know about the championships but most were won by having more talent and being able to run the ball and push over whoever was in the way. Its easy when you have talents miles ahead of opponents. Look at the RBs only his recent RBs had success in the nfl. Ingram been taking peds since he hit the nfl.

Meyer*- covers up murderers and woman beaters then fakes heart attacks anytime he gets caught.

Spurrier*- did great but couldn't get the gamecocks on the level of his previous teams.

Les Miles-  Got the wins some might think he got enough big wins but he has racked up overall wins.

Fulmer-  I think the change if recruiting messed him up but still his record speaks for itself.

So we not going to even give Gus Malzhan an honorable mention?  Basically created an offense that everyone uses a variation of and was 2 plays away from having 2 NCs himself.

I'd pick him over Stallings easy.

Stallings also has a super bowl ring.  Malzahn has the easiest job in America beat you can lose 5 games a year beat Alabama once every 3 to 4 years and get a raise. That's the difference between coaching at Bama you are judged on if you won the NC at Auburn did you beat Alabama.  Outside of FSU what other national title did Malzahn lose by 1 play. 2nd best year he still lost 4 games.

Malzahn's SEC record is 33-23 for a 58% .  You think with that record he is top 5 SEC coach the last 37 years?  Tuberville was a better Coach.

Malzahn even said he took most of his offense from the 1988 Cincinnati Bengals.

See there's ya issue.  You're going by win percentage only...not the factors behind it.

Look what Auburn situation was before Gus.  Most would struggle with the mess Chiznik and company left him with.

Chiznik won Auburn's only national title and bowl win in the same season ever?

Shug in 25 years only won 1 sec title and was on probation that year.

What did Dooley do from 83 forward?

He retired shortly after '83 and became the AD.

Why ignore the first 20 years of his head coaching career. His resume is as strong or stronger than every coach you listed except for Saban and maybe Urban Meyer (he is pretty scummy and quit on his team's twice). Had Stallings not coached at Alabama you would have never mentioned him.

Dooley's resume includes 1 NC, 6 SEC Championships, 2 time Coach of the Year award, and 5 time SEC Coach of the Year.

He was  HC till 1988.  If we go back 20 years then Bryant, Spurrier, Saban, and Meyer without a doubt are all better.  Without Herschel Walker Dooley would really fall back on the list of SEC coaches.  No Coach's career was helped more by a single player than Dooley's.  Stallings won as many National Titles as anybody in the SEC outside Bryant, Saban, Meyer. Wallace Wade won 3 at Alabama but before the SEC.

Alabama has had 5 Coaches with better records than Dooley while at Alabama.

All won National Titles and had at least 1 perfect season.

Wallace Wade

Frank Thomas

Paul Bryant

Gene Stallings

Nick Saban

I don't have a problem with Dooley outside his big mouthed wife. Most think he is he best Georgia coach all time. But at Alabama he would be thought of as 6th best.  Stallings would always be more beloved if Dooley Coached at Alabama because Stallings is one of Bear's boys. Be happy for Dooley winning it in 1980 or it would be 1942. Georgia has never won a 1 vs 2 national title game.

You asked what people's thoughts were, and I don't see how Dooley is not included. His resume speaks for itself.

Funny you include a coach who was fired from his position. And others who resume is less than that of Dooley's. Your dismissal of him probably has something to do with him playing at Auburn, and beating the almighty Bear Bryant as a second year head coach. Lol

Who was fired?

In 1965 Alabama won it again. Georgia won on a terrible call player was on his knees when he pitched it. Home cooking at its finest.

Kinda like the home cooking Bama got in the 2018 National Championship? Lol

Oh, and Fulmer was fired. He was allowed to save a little face by calling it a "resignation".
