Back then Valdosta,Lowndes and Northside WR Ran region 1...

Northside WR and Lowndes used to have some grueling games... Wish they'd play more but obviously one has fallen off....

Conrad Nix had Northside WR primed...

That explains why when I looked up the winningest teams since 2004 in Georgia, I found Northside in the top 5. That region looks absolutely perfect in the high school football landscape.

This retrospective is not being kind to Southlake Carroll. This might be the worst of their three-peat teams but that Smithson Valley team was Tuuuuurrible.

Both those teams look small and slow IMO.

Then you have a team like Mission Viejo beating some big dogs and being ranked 4th?

Smithson Valley is physically one of the worst teams I've ever seen in a big game like this. Then on the first two plays Chase Daniel gets swamped by their rush.

How they were #1 in the country that year is a mystery.

Proves how bad these polls were even just 16 years ago.

Have any highlights or games from that season?

Also Georgia guys any state title highlights or film from that year?   Lowndes I believe won it all.

Not exactly. However, I have video from the 2004 semifinals between Cartersville and Washington County if you're interested. Odd enough, there's video from Lowndes playing Southwest DeKalb in 1999.

if its 2004 throw it in here!

There seems to be a lot of 2004 videos on Cartersville. They only went 6-4, yet they worked their way to the semifinals. The highlights above should be assumed to be from an average Cartersville team. Use that as reference for the rest of the state.

I kind of want to know something about La Cueva, (Albuquerque, New Mexico).    #7 in the nation?

This is from New Mexico's Rivals page when they put together an all-time New Mexico top 100:

"Hendo's Breakdown: The 2004 La Cueva Bears could probably be ranked in a national all-time best of the best high school team rankings if ever put together. With more than eight D-1 prospects on the team once again, La Cueva entering the 2004 season with a 13 game winning streak and quickly proved that they were again the team to beat absolutely stomping their first three opponents by a combined 136-0. They then beat Las Cruces 34-7, beat St. Pius X 36-7 and that touchdown by Pius on fourth and short would be the second to last touchdown scored on La Cueva for the rest of the season and that game took place on October 2nd. La Cueva would beat their next eight opponents by a combined 405-7. They beat Albuquerque 79-0, beat Del Norte 50-0, beat Santa Fe 61-0, beat Highland 21-0, beat Manzano 58-7, beat Eldorado 61-0, beat Las Cruces in the semifinals 35-0, and beat Clovis in the title game 40-0. Senior Running Back Frankie Baca ran for more than 2,400-yards that season helping Fred Romero win his second straight state title. The Bears won 26 games in a row making for the most dominating back-to-back years ever. Compiling the power rankings, no other team throughout history would of came close to beating this team..."

Most notable of those 8 D1 recruits was eventual Texas d-lineman Aaron Lewis, and I know the previous year's team had a guy named Seth Johnson that was a standout two-way guy that would play baseball and football at BYU (think he played on '04 team as well but can not confirm).

That's back when Lowndes, Valdosta, Colquitt, Tift, Coffee, Warner Robins, Northside and Houston Co were all in the same region. It was by far the best and deepest region in the state.

It may have not been 2004 but those teams made up region 1 at some point in my high school days. I graduated in 2009.

In 2004, Colquitt was a 4 seed and lost a close game 9-0 to Camden County in the first round. Camden would go on to lose 30-0 to Lowndes in the semifinals that season.

Interestingly enough, Parkview was the runner up to Lowndes. The Panthers finished 13-2 with loses to Camden and Lowndes.

Even though the state championship game for California was not reinstated until the 2006 season, I know that MV won the State title in 2015 for their division, but I believe most people agree that the 2004 MV team is the best in the program's history, or just the best in Bob Johnson's coaching career.

It reminds me that some sources vary, some say ranked 3rd in the nation, some say 2nd. Referring to the 2004 MV team.

The 2007 SLC team was better than what the 2004 team looked like in their title game.

GSB stated in a different thread the possibility of a team benefiting from the wins and success of another team. Perhaps that what happened with Carroll here:

1.) Carroll blows out Texas #22 Midland Lee 45 - 15.

Not so impressive other than the fact that Midland Lee blew out an up and coming Euless Trinity 56 - 32. Euless Trinity went on to run the tables in the 5A Division 1 state playoffs before running into eventual 5A Division 1 state champion #10 Tyler Lee in the fourth round. Euless Trinity had already beaten #10 Tyler Lee 42 - 39 earlier in the season but lost the playoffs rematch. That trickles down to Carrol.

“>” = “Beat”

Euless Trinity: Beat 5A Division 1 state champion 42 -  Tyler Lee 39;

Midland Lee 56 > Euless Trinity 32

Carroll 45 > Midland Lee 15

2.) [13-2] Lufkin who finished #2 in Texas had also beaten #10 Tyler Lee 44 - 33 earlier in the season.

#1 Carroll took out #2 Lufkin in the 5A Division 2 state semifinals 37 - 30.

3.) Longview who finished #5 in Texas; along with Abilene who finished #3 in Texas both defeated Louisiana State champion Evangel Chris. Academy. Both were undefeated throughout the year until they fell in the playoffs.

Abilene was taken out in the third round by Carroll 35 - 30.

Longview was taken out by Lufkin in the third round 31 - 21.

All of that success again may have trickled down to Carroll:

#3 Abilene/ #5 Longview >  🥇Evangel C.A.

Carroll > #3 Abilene > 🥇Evangel

Carroll > #2 Lufkin > #5 Longview > 🥇Evangel

Both Lufkin/ Longview > 🥇Tyler Lee 5A Division 1 state champion.

To be honest, it looks like the perfect alignment of events happened to make Carroll possibly appear stronger than they actually were.

We’ll never actually know.

Anyway, here’s a video of the playoff game between Tyler Lee vs Euless Trinity [Round 4 Playoffs]: What do you guys think of them compared to Carroll?

Wow, that's a lot of stuff. Anyways....

#5 Abilene beat Evangel Christian 19-15 in Texas.

MNC SLC beat Abilene 35-30.

That doesn't seem like a whole lot of separation to me and that wasn't one of Evangel Christian greatest teams... especially early that season.

So to start off I'm seeing some really random teams from random states lol.   As you can see the maxpreps computer rankings were pretty horrible at the time.   Can anyone confirm if this was the same as Calpreps back then?

What teams were underrated?   Overrated?

19 or 20 of those teams are still playing quality football.

What you don't see is all these new wannabes and new supercharged academies that have popped up and invaded the game.

3. Mission Viejo, Calif. (14-0)

Still plays good football most years.....they will never be #3 again in their history though.

In 2004 Mission Viejo beat Mater Die twice, Poly and DLS.

Mission Viejo beat Mater Dei 63-23 in their Champ game. That will never happen again 😄

Anyone have HSFB america or Massey rankings?   Can't seem to find any of the older rankings (can''t really remember them all too well lol)

Can't remember the last time I saw a WA team in the top 10 but I guess breaking the streak carried a ton of weight after they went undefeated that year

Well we actually play in a real state, just like Rummel wouldn't have ever won a state title of they had to play in Florida and those are facts! You are a big loser with nothing, also facts!

You know I always used to think Independence was overrated, but they look better than SLC as far as the eye test.

Independence was good but the question was always whether they would play anybody worth a damn to validate their ranking and the answer this season was no.

The team they beat in that state championship game lost to #2296 Southeast Raleigh (5-6), 21-0.

They had a pretty good defense and an elite passing offense but they faced no resistance at all during that season. Hard to evaluate them completely without some better competition.
