Bill Romanowski or Dick Butkus

Butkus didn't have the advantage of supplement induced rage like Romanowski did. THen again Romo wasn't alone in this regard. I think Butkus was more feared but it's close. Romo really turned into a feared, excellent LB. Some other candidates for this list I would include are Jack Tatum, LT, Reggie White, Ronnie Lott, Rodney Harrison, Charles Haley and James Harrison.

Butkus hands down.

Romo was a roid freak.

Lawrence Taylor would have made Romo cry like a child.  The most feared player in nfl history.

Ray Lewis was also a brutal player.

Don't know about your third line. LT was one of the best players to ever play D but make no mistake Romo threw guys around and was violent. LT was in a way too but not like Romo. And Romo didn't begin using roids until later in his career.

Butkus is considered one of the best players to ever play the game. Romo was a good player, who had a long career. Hell his 49ers years he was never even the best player on his own defense. And even in Denver he did make the Pro Bowl but again was not the best player on his own defense. A lot of baggage, but even keeping that out of the equation, a good, but not a great player by any means.

Well aware. Reggie White and Charles Haley were also listed above re the most feared players ever. Roids are part of the NFL game. Can’t hold that against anyone included in this debate.

Yep

once they go from 300lbs to 177 and die not much to say

Since other feared defensive players besides linebackers are being thrown out there, here’s two more: The Deacon and Dick “Night Train“ Lane.  Both were absolutely feared in their time. Lane might have been the most feared and versatile player in the history of the NFL. He could play any position on the field...played WR and returned kicks too.  Also had 14 interceptions as a rookie in a 12 game season. Teams just started to avoid going anywhere near him, which freed him up to pursue the RB or QB.  He was the reason both the “clothesline “ tackle and the “face mask” tackle were banned in the NFL. His stats are still among the top Players today. He served 4 years in the Army before the NFL too, so he could have had 4 more years in his prime.

You could also say Ronnie Lott and Ed Reed. Lott chopped his finger off to play football and Ed Reed made every WR rethink their life choices. You could say the same for Troy Polamalu. Just ask Pat McAfee.
