130 year old high school permanently closing in Georgia

Albany, Georgia had 4 public high schools for as long as I can remember, but effective immediately, Albany High, home of the Indians, is officially closed and will not re-open for next school year.

I have some friends over in Lee county that think this will help them as they figure to gain some of the players from the closure, Especially as it pertained to a couple of linemen that they felt like could help them out tremendously.

Another interesting angle in this story is that the Georgia high school football schedules were already in, so teams that did have Albany High on their schedules are suddenly all one game short.

Teams like Fitzgerald, Pelham, Thomasville, Berrien, Early county and the other Albany high schools are now looking for a game to fill their schedules for next season.  Fitzgerald being the main one we have discussed on here.

Most of the underclassmen will be rezoned to specific high schools in the area, but the seniors will be granted the right to choose which school they want to graduate in. That could be a pretty huge development depending on their talent levels and where they choose to go. and if they are capable enough to be starters on any other teams in the area.

I think overall, this closure will help the other Albany schools sports programs by increasing the populations and talent pool for them.

For those of us old enough to remember....this news is simply TRAGIC.  The Indians are legendary.  Several of the Albany/Moultrie games from the 50's and 60's are what high school football is about.  Throw in Thomasville and Valdosta...and you had yourself the nucleus of a POWERHOUSE region.  Bobby D was right.

I don't remember a rivalry with Albany High, but do remember games with Westover and Dougherty Comprehensive.

Seeing this closing in the news prompted me to go to the GHSFHA  site to try to discover more info on the Indians and I found that the site has went through some pretty significant upgrading and streamlining.

I think the consensus was that they have enough room to consolidate and obviously save money which can be applied to bettering the other three remaining schools rather than pour money into an aging Albany High.

Albany High was in the AA population category and shrinking.

Reminds me of what's happening in Gadsden County right next to Tallahassee. Back in 2003 Northside and Quincy Shanks merged into East Gadsden High. And one year later Greensboro and Chattahoochee merged into West Gadsden High.

Gadsden Counity always had 4 high schools. Since the teens and 20's all 4 of those high schools have been around. Until 03-04.

Now in 2017, East and West are merging into 1 high school called Gadsden County High.

What is Albany's city population?

I think it's around 157k including the burbs.

76k inside the city limits.

Time to start helping the 10 opponents find replacement. Heard Mitchell County was talking to Dougherty but nothing concrete yet.

Maybe Westover will play Camden County on 9/1

Fitzgerald may be the best team from the Indians schedule that is now short one game.

Update. Brooks County is the only team still looking for games after Albany closed down. They have 8/25, 9/8, and 10/13 still open.

Champagnat has 10/13 open so I gave them the number for Brooks Co coach. Will update when I hear anything

That might actually be a decent game.
