Bob Stoops

Always looked at him as an above average coach who benefited from coaching at a place that recruits itself.

His legacy would be so much bigger had he won more titles. How many did he lose? 3? Vs LSU, USC and Florida. But he ruled the Big 12 for a long time.

Heard Lincoln Riley is the top candidate

Always thought Stoops was one of the best coaches in the country. His record speaks for itself. Biggest problem is he won in his 2nd year and then becomes why didn't you win more and more. Goes to show how tough it is to get there and then win multiple titles.

Same can be said for the high school level if you play in a decent state  :o

Didn't win the big game very often

They are all big games.  When you beat teams like Alabama and Auburn in Bowl Games - That is pretty damn big in my book!

They battled some damn good teams and came up short in some big games - They also won many big games under his watch too.

Great Coach!

His bowl record at OU is 9-9. With his athletes that's under achieving (IMO).

Yeah but Dan, how many programs have been able to stay top 10 relevant like they have for that long.    Look how easily teams like Texas, Miami can get down.   I mean OU doesn't have the most stacked roster every year.

OU recruits itself as noted above.  Even a Miami really just had a long 20 year run.  OU has been relevant for 70+ years.  Recruits from Texas, Midwest as well as nationally.  Nearly all who have coached at OU have won and won big.  The program in recent years seemed stagnant - good enough in the Big 12 but fell flat in biggest out of conference games.  Still producing gobs of NFL talent.

Miami hasn't even made it to the ACC champ game ONE time since they got there, and they are sitting on the most talented area in the world.   OU recruits well, but they aren't all world either.   I'd love to know their recruiting rankings last 5-10 years.   I bet it's good, but not that good.   They may attract players from Texas etc, but they don't just take who they want.   If anything Texas AM is the premier recruiting team in the area.

I feel like this is one of the most common false assumptions in regards to college recruiting.

You are probably right, but some schools are born on 2nd or 3rd base.  Kids dream of playing for those schools.  Still need to do a good recruiting job though.

He lost to some of the most talented teams though. And lets not BS OU was in it until the end against Fl.    That team didn't win, but they sure as hell came to play. (especially on D)

OU's game against Auburn was one of the more impressive beatings last year also.   They put on a fn clinic!  While "better" coached teams like Ohio State were busy getting shut out.

Is he a hall of fame coach? I say no.

Very good question. If he had won at least a 2nd title then I would say definitely yes. Right now I say he might be a borderline yes. I say within 2/3 years he'll be back assuming he's in good health etc.
