Court-packing - the old becomes new again

FDR thought this was a hot idea, until the country rebelled at the brazen attempt to neuter the Court.  But wait 85 years, and the Democrats are up to their old tricks.  Not sure it is a winning issue for them.

Democrats tried mail in ballots to stop lincoln from getting reelected

When that didn't work they shot him in the head

If they try adding 2, you will see GOP voters in the streets.  Doesn’t happen often, worked wonders in Miami-Dade in 2000.

GOP voters in the streets LOL - you mean all of the staffers of Republican offices and lobbyists that went on to hold positions (coincidence I'm sure) all over the Bush Administration?

That grass roots operation?

Sure buddy, I'm sure they'll be out in their Brooks Brothers suits again.

Add 2 or 4 members (to make 11 or 13 total) - all appointed by Biden

Constitution does not mandate 9

Don't break the government then.

Republican's refused to let Obama get anyone through, for no reason other than because they wanted to obstruct and used procedure to do so. So Reid nuked it. Dems held the Presidency, what reason was McConnell using as Minority Leader to block all those judges?

Then Scalia dies 9 months before an election - but according to Republicans that was too close to an election. So they held a seat for over 400 days and it paid off, they got Trump. They all went on record figuring lightning couldn't strike twice in their lifetimes...and whaddya know, it did.

Now, 50 days before an election (people are already voting in Virginia) is just fine. Republicans are the ones defying their own precedent. What Dems say or have said doesn't matter, Mitch set the precedent and is now breaking it: different set of rules for Dems and Republicans.

And because of that, Biden will hopefully reset these bastardizations of the process and appoint 2 Justices. If He wins and gets the Senate (possible but not a certainty at all) I'd say that's the American People telling you they want 2 Dem appointed Justices and DC as our 51st state (DC has a higher population that Vermont and Wyoming and is close behind North Dakota).

You sound scared.

It is a bad idea.  Very bad.  The GOP was not going to approve Garland no matter what, they had the votes.  They have the votes now.  But that is the normal way business is done.  Packing the court is a naked power grab, and a whole different level of eff you to the process.  As FDR learned.

Uh-huh.

Then enlighten me.

Please.

What really happened?

Did McConnell not grind Obama's judges to a halt?

Did McConnell not say 9 months out was too close to the election? Is it totally normal to hold a SC seat open for 400+ days? It's normal to say no matter who HRC appoints we won't vote as Ted Cruz said?

Is he now saying 2 months out with early voting already going on isn't too close?

Feel free to actually answer.

The held a seat for over 400 days, on a nomination made 6 months before an election. Their reasoning was "let the people decide." - And they did, by Electoral Vote Trump was elected.

Now, the precedent they set is no longer valid. Votes are taking place in Virginia, ballots are being sent out, we're 2 months away from election day - but now it's not "too close to an election."

Go ahead, explain away the blatant hypocrisy. Obama made a nomination and the Republicans, in a truly unprecedented move wouldn't even give Garland a hearing...that's not business as usual, they stole a seat and now are going back on their own precedent.

Again, you sounds freaked out because you know what's coming if the Senate and White House flip. Elections have consequences, and if the American people flip the Senate and WH, that's because they want Biden to undo the Republican power grab taking place.

PROVE ME WRONG.

I am still confused about this court packing procedure.  If Democrats have the ability to do it,  why don’t the Republicans have the same ability?

Are you saying at any given time during trumps presidency he could have just randomly started nominating justices to pack the court?

More or less, yes.  But FDR tried it and the backlash was enormous.  See, one side plays by the rules and one is always trying to rig the game.

The house judiciary GOP just drew up a resolution condemning the Democrats call for packing the courts.

I just can’t wait for this Cuban American woman to be nominated and watch the left wingers bash her all day.  They are of already come out and publicly said that if you are a Catholic or Christian you cannot objectively work as a judge.

This is the correct answer and on point.
