PA Playoffs COVID heartbreak

Sad story from PA. Harrisburg has been one of the top programs in the state in recent years. Their school district originally was not going to let them play this fall, but reversed their decision in early October. Harrisburg had to find 4 games in 18 days in order to be eligible for the playoffs, and heading into the weekend it looked like they would come up short, but Sunday afternoon they were able to arrange a Monday game with State College, and after winning that one they were the top seed in District 3 Class 6A when the brackets were announced on Tuesday morning.

Hours later, a Harrisburg player tested positive for COVID, and just like that they were out of the playoffs.

Since the brackets had already been set, the next-best team was also not allowed into the playoffs.

What a year.

While we're on the topic of Central PA Class 6A football, the other district playoff game will be streamed tonight:

Interesting matchup. Central Dauphin lost to SJP in last year's state championship game and hasn't been challenged this year. Central York has outscored opponents 354-10 in their six games and have a 2022 QB already committed to Penn State but they play very weak opposition and their league hasn't had much playoff success.

That sucks.

In Ohio, Northmont was undefeated and having one of the best seasons in school history. They had been good in the past, but this was the first time they had been a serious threat to make it out of their region and possibly even play for the state title.

Last week they were in the 3rd round of the playoffs, and slated to play a Springfield team they had already beaten in the regular season. Hours before game time, a Northmont player tested positive and they had to forfeit their spot in the playoffs.

More heartbreak this week:

Warwick, because of a rising number of COVID-19 cases in the school district, has pulled out of the District 3 Class 5-A playoffs. The Warriors (8-0) were scheduled to play Gov. Mifflin (9-0) in a highly-anticipated district title game on Friday night in Shillington, Berks County. That game will not be played. Gov. Mifflin has received a forfeit victory over Warwick, has been declared the district 5-A champion and will advance to the PIAA state semifinals.

Saturday’s PIAA quarterfinal football game between Central Catholic and McDowell was canceled Friday due to COVID-19 concerns, and McDowell will advance to the next round of the state playoffs.

Central Catholic won the WPIAL 6A title last week. The school announced Wednesday that it would shut down Thursday due to a third positive COVID-19 case. According to Vikings coach Terry Totten, at least three more positive tests were discovered Friday, and the school decided to forfeit Saturday’s game, thus ending Central Catholic’s season.

“We had three [positive cases] in the school, and there was talk that if it got bigger than that, the Diocese [of Pittsburgh] would insist on online learning, and there would be no more school activities,” Totten said.

Totten said none of Central Catholic’s players or staff members tested positive for COVID-19 since the beginning of the season.
