Functionally, there is little to no difference.  They are both .223 caliber (basically a powerful .22) magazine fed semi-automatic rifles.

But one is much scarier looking.

 

 

Which is exactly why we can't give into the left about this, because it's a slippery slope. As soon as they get rid of the scary looking ones, they'll turn their attention to the other, non-scary semi-automatic rifles, and then when they get those...

The AR-15 is just the civilian version of the M16.

It's not just scary looking. It's actually a semi-automatic M16.
