WOOD-RIDGE – St. Joseph waited an extra year to atone, then added to its record total of Bergen County baseball titles.

The Green Knights defeated top-seeded Don Bosco, 6-5, in Monday’s final to capture their record-raising 11th Bergen championship in the 62-year history of a tournament that last year was wiped out due to the pandemic.

“We said from Day 1 that we were bringing this back home,” Green Knights senior Jimmy Romano said after earning the save.

Second-seeded St. Joseph (23-2) was hungry to return to the field in 2020 and 2021, after losing in the Bergen County final in 2019 to Ridgewood.

“This was a redemption year for us,” senior Sean Hard said after producing the game-winning hit. “Losing last season [to the pandemic] was huge, we were really bummed about it, but we came in this year with a great group of guys and we were ready and we worked from Day 1.”

Hard provided the game-winning hit, a leadoff home run to left field in the top of the sixth to give St. Joseph its 6-5 lead at the Wood-Ridge Athletic Complex.

“They lost as sophomores in the final, and they were itching to play last year and we didn’t get to play,” St. Joseph coach Mark Cieslak said. “So I’m really glad that it played out – they deserved it this year, for sure.”

St. Joseph players celebrate as their teammates score in the first inning against. Don Bosco in the Bergen County baseball tournament championship in Wood-Ridge on May 31, 2021.

Interestingly, Hard, despite the game-winning hit, was named tournament Most Valuable Pitcher, after throwing shutouts in victories over Westwood and Bergen Catholic.

“Sean is as good of a hitter as he is a pitcher,” Romano said. “He’s an absolute stud. I have as much confidence in him as anyone else. He goes out there and does his thing, and I knew that was going to happen. He was due for that.”

St. Joseph was error-free and the relief pitching was stellar. Senior Brendan Lysik threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of senior starter Jude Zern and earned the victory. Romano retired the final five batters to earn that save.

“Our sophomore year, Jimmy came in and carried us all the way through the counties to the final, arguably the best pitcher in the county, the state,” Hard said. “He came out and did what he does every single time.”

“We’ve waited long enough,” Romano said. “Two years ago we got our shot and we couldn’t make it, and we promised each other this year, each and every one of us, that we were going to work as hard as we can to get back in this spot again.”

Also interesting, Romano, despite earning the save, was named tournament Most Valuable Player. He batted third in the order and tied the game in the fifth, 5-5, by crushing a high breaking ball over the fence in left field for a two-run homer.

Extra-base hits contributed to five of the Green Knights’ six runs. Senior Derek Bensinger’s two-out, two-run double in the first provided a 3-0 lead.

Don Bosco (20-5) scored three runs in the first to tie it, 3-3. Sophomore Allen Hernandez drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly. Seniors Kevin Murray and Caden Dana, the starting pitcher who allowed four earned runs in 5 1/3 innings, followed with run-scoring doubles.

The Ironmen scored twice in the second to take a 5-3 lead. Sophomore leadoff hitter Eric Becker pulled a two-run homer over the fence in right, two batters after Nick LoCurto opened the inning with a single to left-center. The Ironmen were hurt by three errors.

“They played better than we did and they won the game,” Don Bosco coach Mike Rooney said. “We made three errors on defense and we didn’t execute certain pitches when we needed to, and that usually spells a loss.”

Hey we got a playoff win,  didn’t expect that,

we have a freshman goalie, so maybe he becomes a stud by junior year

the kid is already a stud....entire  team  is young.....losing Rigler to ACL injury hurts .,...and yes we are always winning game yesterday...was there.  Watched Townson coach taking notes of Notre Dame FOGO who I think is a commit and got outplayed by Rummel on SJR...would say it was 9-6 in favor for Rummel off the face.

lets see what kind of shanty lax bosco will bring to the game tomorrow.....I expect nothing  but hard hitting from SJR after last games nonsense....

Odds are ND sucks at lacrosse. Let's keep it real....

Your "stud" goalie gave up 20 vs DBP earlier this season including a self goal, while your FOGO was 5/24 in the same game. #reality

Kaminsky ??? Pretty sure injuries derailed career , he got a nice signing bonus tho, and he’s a smart kid, he’ll do big things outside of baseball

he's still chasing the dream here in the Lehigh Valley, PA, for the Phillies AAA team.  Had one year 2017 where forearm soreness kept him out of action, but otherwise appears as though he just didn't quite have the stuff to earn a call-up to the bigs, although he did very well in a number of minor league seasons, and had a brief cup of coffee with St. Louis last year.
