Lots of familiar faces in the semifinals...Stone Bridge-Highland Springs the highlight.

Class 6
Battlefield (13-0) at Oscar Smith (11-1)--Oscar Smith was shut out by SJB, but has scored at least 42 points in every in-state game, including 185 in three playoff games. Battlefield won their first regional championship since 2011 by shutting down a high-powered Freedom-Woodbridge offense, but this will be a step up for them.

South County (11-2) at Madison (12-1)--Rematch of last year's semifinal which was narrowly won by South County. This year Madison is the favorite after winning twelve straight following an opening loss to Stone Bridge. South County appeared to be fading late in the regular season but won three straight close games to capture the region championship.

Class 5
Maury (7-1) at Green Run (13-0)--Maury lost four regular season games to COVID but their only on-field loss was to New Bern (NC).

Highland Springs (10-3) at Stone Bridge (13-0)--The perennial state championship game matchup, now in semifinal form due to regional realignment. Stone Bridge has crushed everyone so far but they often start slow when they have to face more athletic opponents than they see locally.

Class 4
King's Fork (11-1) at Varina (11-1)--Varina beat Highland Springs the last week of the regular season. King's Fork's only loss was to Oscar Smith.

Broad Run (12-1) at Salem (12-1)--Broad Run got massacred 64-7 by Stone Bridge but is better than that score indicates. Salem lost their opener against Martinsburg.

Class 3
Brentsville (11-2) at Phoebus (12-1)--Is this finally the year for Phoebus?

Abingdon (12-1) at Liberty Christian (12-0)--Having nailed down their spot at the #1 LCA in Virginia, Liberty Christian now looks to win their first state title. Abingdon beat LCA in a heated basketball semifinal last year.

Class 2
King William (11-1) at Woodstock Central (11-1)--King William has an RB committed to Wake Forest and has averaged over 50 points a game since losing their opener.

Appomattox (11-1) at Graham (12-0)--Appomattox has won five of the last six state championships; Graham won the other.

Class 1
Essex (8-1) at Riverheads (12-0)--Riverheads has won 48 games in a row, including three straight semifinals over Essex from 2017-2019.

Galax (10-2) at Holston (13-0)--VHSL regulations require Galax to lose to Riverheads in the championship game.

Semifinal Results

Class 6
Oscar Smith 49 Battlefield 10
Madison 28 South County 6

Madison's defense has been very stingy this year but I think they're going to have a hard time with Oscar Smith.

Class 5
Maury 35 Green Run 7
Stone Bridge 28 Highland Springs 26

Highland Springs scored with five minutes left to make the score 28-26, got an unsportsmanlike penalty on the celebration and missed the long two-point conversion. They never got the ball back.

Class 4
Varina 35 King's Fork 28
Broad Run 28 Salem 24

Winning touchdowns scored in the final minute of both games.

Class 3
Phoebus 43 Brentsville 0
Liberty Christian 56 Abingdon 13

Famous Original LCA looking to win their first VHSL football championship.

Class 2
King Wiliam 38 Woodstock Central 29
Graham 42 Appomattox 28

Demond Claiborne ran for 300-ish yards for King William

Class 1
Riverheads 56 Essex 12
Galax 51 Holston 21

Like I said, VHSL regulations. With Kirtland's loss yesterday I think Riverheads has the longest winning streak in the nation.

Has there ever been a high school athlete who had a more clutch calendar year than Stone Bridge's Jacob Thomas?

February: Scored 26 points in state championship basketball win

April: Caught winning touchdown pass in overtime of state championship game

December: Threw game-winning 37 yard touchdown pass on last play of state championship game

Championship Results

Class 6
Oscar Smith 42 Madison 17--After Madison pulled within 21-17 early in the second half, Oscar Smith's Kevon King had third-quarter touchdown runs of 56 and 96 yards to help the Tigers pull away. King ran for 290 yards on the day.

Class 5
Stone Bridge 27 Maury 21--As posted above, Stone Bridge won it on a touchdown pass from Jacob Thomas to Zeke Wimbush on the final play of regulation.

Class 4
Varina 28 Broad Run 21--Varina held off a late Broad Run rally as renaissance man Anthony Fisher ran for a touchdown, threw for a touchdown, and intercepted a late hail-mary attempt.

Class 3
Phoebus 22 Liberty Christian 14--Donald Gatling's pick six with 3:18 left won it for Phoebus. Virginia internet ppl very happy to see the VHSL's only private school lose.

Class 2
King William 48 Graham 21--Demond Claiborne ran for 250 yards and added a long TD reception as an eastern team won the class 2 championship for the first time since 2012. Claiborne finished the season with 52 touchdowns.

Class 1
Riverheads 45 Galax 14--Make it 50 straight wins and 6 straight state titles for Riverheads. Apparently this was supposed to be their rebuilding year.
