Just used them as an example. A geographic area would also suffice to make this point. I honestly can't tell you what makes a 3* kid into a 4* but I assume it has to do with number of verbal offers and maybe you get the bump for showing up at one of their camps or something but I do know they suck up to certain schools/coaches as well.

Being from the area, I know STA and the Broward County scene very well...now and going back 50 years ago. STA routinely gets transfers from the local public schools and a substantial number jump in recruiting status when they do. Current UM Cane Xavier Restrepo is an example. Ask any public school coach from the area. The kids down there know it, too. That's why some transfer.

I agree there is no magic formula. And that is why national rankings in high school, while amusing, are very limited in their use to make predictions. At a high school level, individual matchups are often huge, especially when a team has a big playmaker. Yet some choose to focus on past wins-losses to predict the future versus analyzing who is going to be able to exploit who come gametime. OldCoach
...to generate discussion. Further below are the approximate student populations of 35 of the Top 100 public high school football teams in the country this year. Only 3 schools under 1500 students made the list. I guess one could debate it is natural that larger public schools will be disproportionately represented due to a larger pool of prospective players, but we've all run into some very tough small teams out there who can routinely hang with the big boys. It's my perception that public schools with less than 1200 students are rarely represented in the national polls in the modern era. If that is true, it follows that less populous states lacking large metro areas will rarely be represented in the rankings. So, what's the point? A talent-rich state such as Mississippi only has a dozen high schools with populations of 1500 or or more students. The vast majority of their schools are "small." Anyone who has traveled to the backwoods of the South can appreciate how intimidating it could be for one of these big city, ranked teams to play there. There are undoubtedly some smaller schools in talent rich areas that I believe could roll one of these ranked teams on a good night if playing at home. I have found that many of these smaller schools in the South can be a bit up and down in terms of their performance year-to-year because of their limited pool to pull from. But, when the stars align, you occasionally have an absolute powerhouse that is flying under the radar. I saw this phenomenon with some of the teams from south Georgia. Per capita, there are rural areas of the Deep South that are as rich or richer talent-wise than anywhere in the country. In a way, high school rankings are a bit like trying to rank fighters in different weight classes against each, ie who is the best fighter pound-for-pound?, since there are not well-defined, separate polls for large/medium/small schools Unfortunately, I think smaller schools often get left out of the discussion. I think there are a few Graham-Kapowsins throughout the country most years. And that is the correct way to interpret their win, not just to laugh at Collins Hill. We can't possibly know all there is to know about all of the teams throughout the country. And, contrary to common belief, a team doesn't have to schedule Mater Dei or St. John Bosco to be really good. GK should be top 15 in the country at worst. There is no way GK is top 15 , top 50 maybe . Honestly, I would take CCSD over them . Way more talent and size for CC . The big reveal was how unimpressive CH was, being ranked in top 5 in some polls . Ca , mainly socal, is on a different level this season. I know you want your Lakeland to be viewed higher in polls , but using GK as an example doesn't cut it . Maybe the game was anticlimactic for CH after winning GA state championship

If in-state experts cannot even get in-state predictions correct, good luck trying to predict two teams from across the country playing each other. If you separate the emotion from the decision, its possible to have a 70%+ correct pick rate in any match. In state or out of state. Regarding Bixby, their record is not a good gauge of their fit among other top teams. Three big reasons. 1. Probably 50+ teams could be 14-0 against the Bixby schedule. 2. Bixby has no Tier 1-3 wins. 3. Bixby does not have the 3*, 4*, 5* kids that the top teams have. As far as GK, we know they are about = to Collins Hill, but we don't really know where CH stacks up since they don't have any Tier 1-3 wins either. We know SJB easily beat Oscar Smith and Miami Central and both those teams ran their state division. We know Mater Dei rolled DV who is a Top 3-4 team in Texas. MD won by 40 while NS only beat DV by 7. We know Servite easily beat SJB in the playoffs by 3 scores. We know that Cen10 and Servite gave MD their toughest games and beat 2-3 common opponnents by the same margins. We know that SFA beat IMG who rolled their other opponnent's. We know STA beat SFA. Based on all this, I can state with 70%+ certainty that the top teams are: (In no particular order) STA, SFA Servite, SJB, Mater Dei, Cen10, The next group include: DV, Westlake, IMG, Jesuit, Bergen, North Shore The next group would include: Collins Hill, Gk, Bishop Gorman, Hamilton, Saguaro, Chandler, Center Grove

Way more talent and size for CC . The big reveal was how unimpressive CH was, being ranked in top 5 in some polls . Ca , mainly socal, is on a different level this season. I know you want your Lakeland to be viewed higher in polls , but using GK as an example doesn't cut it . Maybe the game was anticlimactic for CH after winning GA state championship “Maybe”??? Don’t venture out too far. 🙄🙄🙄 bgw

I think they looked to me tier 1. That O-line of theirs would definitely stand up to most, if not all of the pass rushes from the tier 1 teams. They pass extremely well , the key to moving ball against MD's defense

WA state has a proud history of beating "top" California high schools. Sit this one out junior.

But Based on the MD destruction of DV, I am not confident that Texas has any teams that can hang within 2 scores of the top "Power privates".
