On2whls
OC Register reported today that PG&E, So CA Edison, ands San Diego Gas and Electric have filed a joint proposal with the Public Utilities Commission to add a fixed monthly charge to electric bills based on income. At the same time a reduction in electricity rates will be offered but will benefit low income users the most. Under 28k $15/mo fixed + usage $28k-$69k $30 fixed + usage $69k-$180,000k $51/mo fixed + usage > $189k $92/mo fixed + usage Looks like this is part of the states answer to making up the revenue shortfall as conversion to electric cars results in reduced gas tax revenue. So, go buy the Tesla because you can afford it, but bend over because the state can’t. Sorry, no link since I heard it on the radio but google OC Register if you are interested. Cossacks
PG&E has been trying to stave off bankruptcy due to the billions in fires they have been found responsible for and have had to payout.

Does anyone on here actually have solar panels and don’t have to pay psg?

Typically use a lot less energy and don’t hit the same usage thresholds as more affluent users. Plus, the rate reduction won’t be a straight line situation. They didn’t explain exactly how people with solar panels will be affected but a rate reduction on lowered usage will amount to less savings than the same reduction on those without solar. In a few years I’ll be totally off grid anyway so no biggie for me, but for those without the same option, it’s just not a good thing. I’m interested the rate reduction, tiers, etc… They’re saying it could reduce bills at all income levels, but it’s obviously not going to. Even if the reduction was a straight 33% which is unlikely, it’s a $51/mo hit for me based on my usage. I don’t have solar and in the winter if it drops below 65 I just put on a long sleeve Tee and lightweight sweatshirt. In summer, we run 88f downstairs and 95f upstairs so compared to most in the IE, we’re pretty thrifty. It’s a kick in the butt to be energy efficient and still possibly get whacked harder. I can hardly wait for the distance based mileage tax Newsome is pushing. I commute 25k mi a year and average 62.5mpg meaning I use a lot less gas than people with much shorter commutes that drive low mpg vehicles, but I’ll get nailed again if they push that through. I know several that do but believe me, there is NO free lunch. A lot of people like to brag up their low electric bills, but then when you start peeling back the onion, you find out what it is costing them overall. There’s a few ways to “own” the panels, and you will pay less but you have to consider the payback period whichever way you choose. It’s similar to a lot of Tesla owners that will argue tooth and nail about how much cheaper it for them. But, Tesla doesn’t give the things away. You can buy a cheap enough high quality econo car, put over 100k miles on it in ten years and including gas and maintenance, still not have spent as much as for a Tesla, and not have range anxiety or battery life anxiety. But, if you have enough disposable income to get one, they are a sweet ride.
