On coyotes, misplaced fear, and stupid people part 3

It is not uncommon for me to encounter coyotes as I walk my dogs each morning usually 5:00 to 6:30. I also get to witness people’s behavior around coyotes.

This morning at about 5:15 a guy stops his car, and tells me I should turn around as there is a pack of coyotes ahead and they mean business.  When I asked what “means business” means, he told me he saw them on the road, stopped, honked his horn and they didn’t move. So then he opened the door to his car and tried to shoosh them away.  Finally, he walked toward them slowly yelling and they started to advance on him, so he got back in the car and took off.  I thanked him for his concern, wished him a good day, then continued down the road.

Sure enough, about 500 yds or so down the road at the corner of California and Lester Ave, I counted 4 pack members and a leader.  As I continued forward my dogs became anxious and a bit agitated.  At about 50 feet the pack leader dropped his ears down and back, crouched and started a slow advance.  I stopped, instructed my dogs into a submissive posture(lay down). The pack lead then stopped.  I started to advance keeping my dogs at bay and just as I got to the extent of the leashes, he got up, turned and trotted up the road.  The pack followed along with two coyote pups that had been in some tall grass.

As I passed the spot where the coyotes had been, the guy in the car came back, stopped and told me, good thing for you they took off.  I told him, no they were here when I arrived but I basically told them to move on.  He laughed in a “yeah right” sort of way, then proceeded to admonish me for being a wreckless dog owner, not too smart to boot, and I should be reported to animal control. I thanked him again, then turned and continued my walk while he turned around and sped off tires screeching.

WTF.  How many stupid fear driven idiots are there among us?
