NOLA Sugar Bowl Prep Basketball Classic: John Curtis, St Thomas More, Milton (GA), Trinity (Louisville)

Interesting basketball tournament coming up. Lots of good football programs involved.

John Curtis will open up with Milton, GA.

Wish they could bring back the Sugar Bowl Prep Football Classic..... that lasted exactly 1 year, I believe. I'd have to check. Either way they never really did give it much time to develop.

Anyways, a fun bracket.

  • RedZone changed the title to NOLA Sugar Bowl Prep Basketball Classic: John Curtis, St Thomas More, Booker T Washington (Miami), Milton (GA), Trinity (Louisville)

NOLA Newman is also in the tournament and they are absolutely stacked.

BUT, they got hit hard last night for recruiting violations. Coach suspended 1 year and no playoffs. Newman being very bad evidently.

I would have them as a favorite..... now I don't know.

(13-1) St Aug is probably the best team in the City this year and I can't believe they're not in this tournament.

My team (Silsbee) played there a few years ago and had a good time. Going back this year. Hopefully we'll be healthy by then. Been having to make due without two key players the whole season so far.

Silsbee has won 2 recent Texas 4A State Championships back-to-back in 2017 and 2018.

Appear to have a decent squad this year just looking at the record.

It's a nice little tournament with much to do. Nobody ever complains about the food and stuff.

We've had some of the big boy powers in this tournament in the past, but this year looks more like regular teams many probably better at football.

I think this was the football event when the worst STA team in 20 years came and beat State Champ John Curtis

My goodness! They really hammered Newman.

I remember that coach a couple years ago saying he was going to turn Newman basketball into a National Power. Well that's going to have to be put on hold. 😭

6-10, 6-9, 6-8 are not really the heights of the normal Newman student. Lmao

The LHSAA is a bear. They don't care who the school is or how much prestige they have or nothing.

ESPNU has had coverage of the City of Palms Classic.

I watched most of the game with the NY (Long Island Lutheran) team defeating a power from MO last night.

NY showed out, impressive team.   Carmelo Anthony’s son is on the squad.

DBP has a very good team, that lost to the NY squad.  Their star player Dylan Harper is going to Rutgers, as is a star player from McEachern, GA, who played in this event.

DBP beat Columbus FL and their star Cameron Boozer yesterday in the 5th place semis.  They lost to Long Island Lutheran in a close game.

DBP plays IMG for 5th place finals today at 4:15 pm est.

Liberty Magnet High School (Baton Rouge) went out to Las Vegas and won one of the divisions at the Tarkanian Basketball Classic held at Bishop Gorman High School.

Liberty beat 3 California teams and their best win of the tournament was beating Arizona Top 5 Notre Dame Prep in the semifinals.

Liberty Magnet is probably the #2 team in Baton Rouge this year with Madison Prep being #1.

Bishop Gorman and a bunch of other teams were in this tournament also, but were in different divisions, I guess.

Anyways, good showing out West.

They got chopped down by a Texas team early in the year. So basketball in Louisiana is just like football it seems

Liberty Magnet is 14-2 on the year.

Their only 2 losses are to Madison Prep (Baton Rouge) 67-50 and Dynamic Prep (Texas) 65-63 in OT.

Dynamic Prep is another one of those newly formed prep schools that travel all across the nation with their All-Stars.

It's these type of prep schools that really bring high school basketball down.

Seems like 10 or 15 new prep school basketball teams are formed every year.

Worse than Bishop Sycamore and all that bullshit.

The team Liberty Magnet beat in the championship game > Weston Ranch, CA took out Edgewater, FL.

Edgewater is currently #4 Florida depending on what poll you want to use.

So there were some good teams in the Divisions at this tournament. it's a very large tournament with lots of teams.

Sucks we're (Silsbee) missing two key players.

Second best player is playing in the All American Bowl in football this week and is having to miss out.

Also:

Silsbee - 60

Carver - 50

Final.

Man that Dville game pissed me off lol.

Carver is a pretty decent NOLA squad. Home of Marshall Faulk.

Obviously Silsbee is one of the better teams in the tournament, but Peabody, La is one of the better programs in Louisiana most every year. That should be a good game in the semi-finals.

Anyways, the write-up. 👇

Carver jumped out quick and it turned into a game of runs with Silsbee having the last one.

"Two-sport star Lamarcus Bottley Jr., a star for the Tigers in football as well, pumped in 25 points while Memphis commit Jared Harris had 20 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Carver opened the game on a 7-0 run and led 13-2 before the Tigers awakened to cut the deficit to 15-11 by the end of the first quarter.

Silsbee took over in the second quarter, opening the period on a 9-0 run which morphed into a 16-2 run as Silsbee took a 27-17 lead before the Rams closed the half on a 5-0 run to pull within 27-22 at halftime.

The Rams pulled within 32-30 in the third quarter before the Tigers led 38-34 heading to the final quarter.

Carver (10-5) got to within 45-42 in the final quarter but Silsbee closed the game on a 9-3 run to close it out.

Daijon Leatherman was stout as always for the Rams, scoring 18 points with 17 rebounds, five blocks, four steals and two assists while Laurence Nathan had 16 points and seven rebounds.

Silsbee (14-8) advances to play Peabody in the semifinals Saturday at 11 a.m. The championship game is Saturday at 6:30 p.m., which can be watched live at CrescentCitySports.com."
