Always considered the big 4: Beatles, Stones, Who and Led Zep.

Petty has no voice, it's really all about the music. Solid, diverse, and years worth to choose from. Plant and early Zeppelin were just on another level. I've seen many different bands come out and just do an 'all Zeppelin' encore. Zebra did it the best 12 string and all.
World Citizen
Plant definitely. Can't beat they're best. As far as band's go, I have to add ACDC as a personal favorite. Lots of good memories.
Cossacks
My personal top 5 (Metallica, Stones, GNR, AC/DC, Who) but Zeppelin is the GOAT and so is Plant!
HawgGoneIt
Plant was definitely the better vocalist, but, Tom Petty had the uniqueness about his voice that fit the style and music more perfectly than most any artist before or probably after him. I like both for sure, but, I personally will listen to Tom before Plant... nothing to do with how good of a vocalist they are, just a preference to the style. I saw Zebra back in the 80's at the Chance in Poughkeepsie...it's funny you should mention them because their coming back to the Chance this weekend to play that first album.....great Zep cover group and their first album was hot! Robert is firmly Planted as the best while Tom was just so Petty. I don't understand how you can mess that up. I keed I keed. You can't have Plant play Petty music and vercy visa. 😋
Lamarfan
You can't really compare them they're like apples to oranges totally different kind of artist. I like them both but Robert Plant was in one of maybe the greatest rock and roll bands of all time Led Zeppelin a definite original.

One week Zebra, next week KC and the Sunshine band, the next week Heart (doing another Zep encore tribute lol). So many bands used to do Zep songs, one of the most INFLUENTIAL bands of their time. Looks like Chimp has been reading an old yearbook for confirmation and/or nostalgia. Who said AC/DC concert? Some real nostalgic stories there.... I don't live in the past, but a GOOD past is worth remembering.

AC/DC?...saw them at MSG years ago...got on the floor...a bodyguard but Angus on his shoulders and carried him around the floor...got real close to him...good time! ...the craziest concert I saw was Judas Priest at MSG...the place got torn apart....they were banned from MSG after that show...great time! AC/DC, floor seating at the Colosseum...was on stage swinging Angus's tie around over my head as the crowd goes nuts LOL. I was at a Priest concert at the Meadowlands....that was THE ONE that stopped any tailgating in the parking lot. Others were chucking M80's off the balcony into the crowd, and I saw a guy light his face on fire in the parking lot (drunk/accidentaly while 'spitting fire'). Always had the sickest destructive crowds at Priest. Does that mean i had a 'misspent youth'? LOL? Where someone has been does not tell always tell you where or who they are...
DBP66
^^ NICE...nothing like a heavy metal show back in the day huh..LOL.."misspent youth"??..hell no!...great memories!!

Funny, never got into the Dead or the 'get stupid scene'. Most metal groups (not the bubble gum train rider ones) had SERIOUSLY good musicians... So what if 66 listened to Zebra? Do you even know what a 12 string is? Did Drummer appreciate all those the Metal groups that had double bass drum setups?
181pl
Different singers. Different eras. I've got Plant in top 3 ever, along with Morrison and Daltry. Love Tom Petty, but different music, different era, different country.
1DayPGA
My top 5 would be Led Zep, Stones, Eagles, Dylan, and The Cure. A little diverse I know. As Sammy would say "Next Tier" Kansas, Metallica, Cheap Trick, AC/DC, Green Day, Shout out to Zebra, loved their first album.
Coletrain06
No doubt about who the better vocalist is........Plant hands down. Petty was all style, rythym, and timing. The better musician is absolutely Tom Petty. The best Rock vocalist is still undoubtedly Freddie Mercury.
