Reflections On My First Battle of the Bridge....

Morning gurus....

Firstly... let me just say....Yulee was bigger, stronger and a better football team than Fernandina Beach.  And it didn't help when FB lost their starting QB and a starting guard in the 1st half to injury.  But...I'm not sure how much difference it would have made in the final 28-0 Yulee win...had they remained in the game.  But...Yulee only lead 7-0 at the halfway point.  Just saying...

It was a great night for football...and it started with a guy parachuting in to the 50 (or so) yard line.  Chick Fil A sponsored the week long event...so they had quite a lot of festivities.  Adding insult to injury...Yulee also won the $5,000 scholarship (given by CFA) to their Athletic Fund.  It was quite a night.  Now...just a FEW things that I thought was interesting....

1.  The Yulee Hornet band...played all night.  And I'm talking ALL NIGHT.  They played when anybody had the ball...."stripers" included.  They even "warmed up" when the Pirate Band was doing their halftime show.  Them boys and girls was what you would call...ROWDY.

2.  Do you like yellow flags at your football game?  If you do...this was the game for you.  I (personally) have never seen such a thing in my life.  And the majority of them were personal fouls or unsportsmanlike conduct.  One Yulee player was ejected and the FB HC got an unsportsman like...for questioning the white hat's parental lineage.  He said he just asked how the striper's mother was doing...but that's not how it was perceived.  A few scuffles...but nothing life threatening.

3.  For the first time in real life (I saw it on TV once)...I saw a fake kneel down from victory formation.  I ain't kidding.  Yulee had the ball with 45 seconds to go...leading 28-0.  They went into victory formation...snapped the ball...started to take a knee...stood up and took off around the end trying to score.  An alert Pirate players took the angle and forced the Hornet player out of bounds.  And you guessed it...there's STILL 7 seconds on the clock.  Yulee has to snap the ball AGAIN.  Needless to say...the "stripers" were nervous as all get out.  They called timeout...and spoke to both sidelines about the final play.  There was some pushing and shoving on the final kneel down...but both coaching staffs took control.  I sat there trying to imagine what would have happened in a Colquitt/Lowndes...or a Lowndes/Valdosta game had something like that taken place.

4.  Finally...I saw one of the cardinal rules of high school sports broken.   I was taught...and still believe....YOU NEVER CELEBRATE ON AN OPPONENT'S FIELD.  NEVER !!!!  You wait till you get back in the field house or on the bus.  But never on the field.  Holy Moly !!!   You fellers do something different down here.  Had that happened in South Georgia...I ain't sure we got enough gendarmes to break up the brawl.  I will give one of the Yulee assistant coaches a kudo.  ONE.  When a Yulee player tried to rush to the middle of the field and plant a Yulee flag...the coach ran him down and tackled him and forced him back to the end of he field.  I sat there stunned.

I've been involved in a lot of football games...but I'll go out on a limb and say...this was the wildest one I've seen since the Colquitt/Lowndes free for all...a few years back.  Ah...sweet memories...(Smile).

Lol. Sounds like Florida teams get away with a whole lot more than their neighbors to the North.

I wasn't at the game like you Rufus, but the word from the Nassau County Nasties was Fernandina Beach lost because they were poor, tiny and inexperienced Pirates.

Did you see the same game as the Nasties??

Well...the Pirates are definitely tiny.  And I suppose you could say...they are inexperienced to some extent.  But to say they are POOR?

Heh....Heh...Heh....
