HawgGoneIt
So I just watched American Valor on NBC and they had the last living member of the Dolittle raid on tonight. 102 years old. Seeing the room all salute and toast him left me a bit teary eyed. Not many WWII guys left around these days. They all deserve something nice to be done for them. If you know one, be the one that does something for them even if it is anonymously. 1

concha
Hah! Just saw a WWII vet today with his vet hat on. I went over to shake his hand and thank him. We were both heading into Costco and he was sitting in one of their motorized carts but didn't know how to get it started so I helped him out. A sadly disappearing national treasure.

TInton Falls, NJ. He may be old. But he can say in his lifetime he was part of the greatest generation ever and at the ripe old age of 95 he won a mayor race.

A sadly disappearing national treasure. I talked to a guy with a Korea hat on this past weekend at the store. We got into all manner of conversation even politics, lol. He had the lead in the convo so I let it ride where ever it went. I was thanking him for his service and he said he didn't want any stolen valor, that he was never in country and only worked on the planes that flew into Korea. I thought that was different and told him that his job was as important as any other. Without air drops the ground guys couldn't eat or be rescued or anything. Anyway, yeah, I always try to take time with our guys like that.

Blueliner
Yes. The greatest greatest American generation ever. No question. Sadly, I don't think America could ever again summon the raw patriotism that it took to fight a war on each side of the globe (and I pray that we never have to again). I''m fortunate to have an annual Pearl Harbor Survivor Reunion near my home. I've gone a few times over the years. I brought my daughters with me once and they were moved. It's pretty small now. Only about 10-15 old duffers left. Bless their hearts. Definitely going this year.

That was a suicide mission. No cover just open field under cannon fire. Brave men

Next time you are passing through Georgia, make the trip to Andersonville. Wanna talk about a place that has weight? There is a weight there, that takes days to shake off.
ChimpGrip
The greatest generation...back when we had real men. Not these modern day "men" who wear man buns and have to ask their wives for permission to do anything. I know one WW2 vet who fought in the Pacific, lots of very interesting stories! He's in his mid 90s. I had two family members who fought in WW2, one survived the Bataan Death March.

I also had two family members fight in WWII, and one is still alive (he wrote a lengthy book about his time spent crossing the Rhine in March of '45, and the Western invasion of Germany...he illegally pocketed some artifacts from a German stronghold his group had overrun...cool stuff). He's a great storyteller. And also definitely has always asked his wife (still alive also, both in their 90s) for permission, or she'd knock his block off. "Real" men are considerate that way.
