ORabidOne
What was the reason for the big push to build a new high school? I always thought that it was because of the ole school's condition was becoming unusable! But I just read a 2017 article, that said that many of the school systems current offices, plus selected extra curricular activities, were going to be housed at the ole facility! IF so, seems as though it would have been more cost effective to have built facilities for THOSE entities, rather than a new one for the students! I mean, up North and out West, schools have ivy growing on their hallowed walls! When was the ole Colquitt County High School built, 1978? GEEEEZ, did they just need to spend some more bucks on a new school, just because they had the money?
HawgGoneIt
The majority of the old high school buildings were settling into the swamps of the Okapilco. The portions that remain in use were all built since 2000, except for the auditorium which they still use. The plumbing was breaking almost daily due to the old buildings sinking. The conduits were rusting causing electrical issues, and creating problems upgrading technologies up to today's standards. Our kids were slipping behind due to lack of technological advancements in their learning, which as we all know is one of the more important things to know and understand today. Currently the school board uses the old 10th grade center for offices, and the G.E.A.R. center has moved into the old 9th grade center, which were the newest buildings on the property. Some demolition has been underway of the older buildings for a while now. I am not totally sure what will happen to all of the buildings, but I think eventually all of the pre2k buildings are probably going to be demolished, except for Withers Auditorium.
