Custom made weights

MOULTRIE – The big one, the one we’ve heard about for more than two years, is still some time away from occupancy.

But while Colquitt County High football eagerly awaits to put a new on-campus indoor practice facility to use, everything else about the preparation for a Packer football season began transitioning this past week over to some new rooms constructed also at the new high school that itself opened two years ago. This includes offices for the coaches, athletic director Greg Tillery and secretary Lisa Brooks, meeting rooms with video screens, a lockerroom, a weight room and something unofficially called the “4th-Quarter Cafe.”

“We’re fortunate to have it,” said head coach Rush Propst in his new office Thursday, though at lot of his personal effects were still at the old field house at the former high school location. “I’m real appreciative of it. It’s wonderful. It will benefit us in football.”

But Propst didn’t limit his excitement to his own program. Nearly every Packer athletic team can now either play, practice or both at the new high school, and Propst said anytime you can bring everything together like that, it’s for the better.

It goes back to the indoor practice facility and its 100-yard field, something no other high school in the state will be able to claim. Construction work was still ongoing this past week, and Propst said as long as the Packers can get in there for spring practice, he will be satisfied. When completed, the coach said about 75 percent of the varsity practices will take place indoors.

The No. 1 reason such a facility is important, he said, is to avoid weather problems. That’s rain, lightning and exposure to direct sunlight on hot South Georgia days.

The indoor facility will also have a turf field, and there’s also a new outdoor turf football field on campus complete with goal posts and a running track. Tillery has said it may not be until the spring of 2019 that this would be used for high school track and field competition.

During most recent Packer football seasons, a high majority of their games were played on turf field like the one at Mack Tharpe Stadium.

“Our turf field in the past eight seasons has saved us,” said Propst, referring to times when it’s rained. “There were times we could not have practiced without it. That’s had as much to do with our winning.

“This is a new level. It takes the elements out.”

The coach added that there are days when the Packers will need to practice outdoors, practice on grass and even practice in the rain, because the only guaranteed time of playing a game indoors is the season-opening Corky Kell Classic at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. In the 2018 schedule, Propst knows they have two games on grass fields: Grayson and Tift County.

Another benefit of the new facility is that it opens up more space for the Colquitt feeder programs. The freshmen team will use the new outdoor field, and sixth and seventh grade teams can use the Mack Tharpe Stadium grounds without interruption. Eighth grade will continue at C.A. Gray.

All totaled, Propst said that’s about 450 players going at the same time. Before, they only had about 2 1/2 fields to accommodate it all.

“We’ve been cramped,” said Propst. “It was adequate, but we’ve made it better, for a working environment and for practice.

“We’ll have the best designed weight room. We’ve doubled it in size, plenty of room to do what we need to do.”

Propst gave credit for the design to Shawn Sutton, the strength and conditioning coach. At the field house, the weight room had one water station; this new one has four. There’s also a new sound system and a turf field in the middle.

There’s also the “second-to-none” equipment room Propst compared to what professional clubs use. The “4th-Quarter Cafe” is a supplemental feeding room to keep the nutritional program going before school, after school and after practice. Propst said there will be team mothers and civic clubs constantly working in the kitchen, and this cafe can also serve as a meeting room.

Propst said there’s still the matter of getting the video equipment set up, and that’s the always-changing technology the coach said they need to keep up with in order to maintain an edge.

“You have to video,” he said. “Every drill. I’ve never not done it, from VHS to DVD, now it’s on the Internet. There’s no down time.”

Indoor practice facilities are all the rage of college football, the University of Georgia opening one itself about a year ago. Propst recalled the tale of how Jimbo Fisher pushed for indoor facility construction when Fisher was head coach at Florida State. Due to the Tallahassee area being a prime area for lightening storms, Propst said Fisher pointed out to boosters that FSU led the nation in lost practice time.

It’s the kind of thing, Propst said, that is a problem in Moultrie, especially in the afternoons.

But these facilities, Propst said, are also what prospects want to see when they visit a college. He feels people will see first class grounds at Colquitt County High, be it Packer Park or the basketball gym.

“I’ve never seen a better tennis or soccer facility anywhere,” he said. “It’s all first class. This should excite any parent to want their child involved.”

Perhaps, for those who can't make the open house! They'll film the new digs and all the trappings, for the PACKER REPORT!

And your tractor trailers go right along with the forklifts that you can’t pump those weights with?  WTF are you babbling about?

Are you off your meds again?

I swear you get less coherent by the hour.

PGL is currently working with the following four GA programs trying to identify quality OOS opponents for them: Cedar Grove, Grayson, Marietta and North Gwinnett. #hellfreezingover

And WHY wouldn't they contact the greatest program in the Southeast? The one with the new practice field!
