Maricopa Community Colleges to eliminate football

“The state's largest community-college district will eliminate football after the 2018 season.

Citing financial constraints, Maricopa County Community College District officials said Monday they are ending the district-sponsored football programs at the four colleges that now have football: Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa and Glendale community colleges.”

More players will go to Western Yuma then I believe it the name of the school. They had the #1 JUCO TE commit to Tennessee

Arizona Western is a residential juco with a national recruiting base-this past season the Matadors had only seven kids from Arizona on their roster, and based on their recent record they are really under no obligation to start recruiting more Arizona kids unless they want to be really great guys.  The Maricopa County District schools are in place to serve the local kids first and foremost-yeah they all have some out of state kids popping up on their rosters, but their typical player was a guy that wasn't ready for D-1 ball (grades or otherwise) that wanted to live at home while working on his next opportunity.  And all told the MCCD teams had some great talent pass through to go along with good success-Glendale, Mesa, and Phoenix all have won NJCAA national titles in the past (GCC has had the most recent run of top-tier success having won the NJCAA crown in 1988, 2000, and 2005), and MCCD alums include Phillipi Sparks, Charlie Garner, and Demetrious Randle (full disclosure last two guys are non-local products).

In my mind this stings a lot less if Arizona had more public four-year schooling options-as it stands ASU, U of A, and NAU are the only public four-year institutions that field football squads, and as all three are D-1 schools (NAU being an FCS school) you're in a situation where if you want to play ball after high school close to home you better be a high-level talent.  Compare that to neighboring states like New Mexico (five public universities with football teams), Utah (also five), and Colorado (10 or 11 public football universities) and it's a pretty glaring deficiency.

My hope is that each college community rallies and finds a way to fund the football teams privately; this was done about ten years back at ASU with the wrestling program.  In the meantime let's enjoy the HC at Independence CC in Kansas go full-asshole in the face of this decision:

They play good football in the Jayhawk Conference and I think it's great that those schools are able to give kids a shot at keeping their football dreams alive.  With that said, unless the coaches in that conference are prepared to offer every Arizona kid negatively impacted by the MCCD's decision (Garden City also had a coach sending texts to kids telling them not to sign with any Arizona juco, even though the two residential jucos-Western and Eastern-aren't directly impacted by this as well as Tucson's Pima CC) they really shouldn't have an opinion on the matter and especially shouldn't be engaging in public dick-measuring contests with coaches across the country.
