Source: Claude Mathis withdraws name from consideration One of the most successful football teams in a football-crazed state has had a difficult time attracting applicants for its open head coaching job, as records show far fewer candidates submitted applications than for other jobs in the Dallas area. The crazy thing is, retaining candidates has been just as tough for DeSoto amid the off-the-field chaos that has enveloped its school district recently. On Wednesday, Marshall coach Claude Mathis -- who applied for the DeSoto opening and has long been rumored to be the front-runner to replace Todd Peterman as head coach -- withdrew his name from consideration for the job, according to a source. Mathis was DeSoto's head coach from 2008 to 2014, compiling a record of 74-18 in that time.

I think the way the Peterman situation was handled soured many. Hell Claude Mathis even withdrew. I will post some more of the article for you. Serious problems with the Program. It has to do with the Superintendent getting let go, and his handling of Coach Peterman, then Coach Matthis was accused of meddling even though he is at Marshall The Superintendent has been let go. It's pretty bad right now. Many in DeSoto, a district of about 10,000 students, have been divided since 2016, when trustees hesitated to renew the contract of football coach Todd Peterman, who led DeSoto to the district's first state championship that year. Peterman resigned from the district in January. in up other news outlets and social media suggested Tuesday that Harris' leave stemmed from the open football coach post. Some suggested Harris was being pushed out so that former coach Claude Mathis, who is now in Marshall, could return. Sherman said in his statement that the two issues are separate. Mathis also was quick to shoot down such talk, saying it only tears down the community.
DevilDog
here is the article in totality https://sportsday.dallasnews.com/high-school/high-schools/2018/02/21/candidates-applying-desotos-head-coaching-vacancy One of the most successful football teams in a football-crazed state has had a difficult time attracting applicants for its open head coaching job, as records show far fewer candidates submitted applications than for other jobs in the Dallas area. The decision by Mathis came just three days after he talked fondly about how DeSoto "will always be special to me." It's a school that he led to back-to-back state semifinal appearances in 2012 and 2013 before leaving in 2015 to become the running backs coach at SMU. Marshall was 6-5 and lost in the first round of the playoffs in 2017, Mathis' first season at the school. Peterman announced Jan. 18 that he was resigning as DeSoto's coach at the end of the school year. As of Feb. 9 -- which was originally listed as the final day that DeSoto's head coaching opening was going to be posted -- there were only 15 applicants according to a list obtained by The Dallas Morning News through an open records request. DeSoto ISD athletic director Larry Davis, who said there ended up being more applicants than 15 but declined to state how many, said the goal is to introduce a lone finalist for approval as DeSoto's new head football coach at a school board meeting Monday. That was after DeSoto ISD's board of trustees voted Monday night to place Superintendent David Harris on paid administrative leave. "I thought that it would have been more [candidates], just because it's DeSoto," said DeSoto associate head coach Brandon Harrison, who is a candidate for the head job. "I don't know if all of the stuff with Coach Peterman is deterring people from wanting to come here. But it is interesting that a lot of people didn't apply for the job." It has been just 10 months since Peterman's job hung in limbo for more than two weeks while the school board decided whether to renew his contract after he led DeSoto's football team to a 16-0 record and the Class 6A Division II state championship in 2016. Even before Mathis dropped out of the running, DeSoto's list of candidates had dwindled. Little Elm coach Kendrick Brown, a former DeSoto defensive coordinator, applied for the DeSoto opening but said Tuesday that he is no longer seeking the job and is staying at Little Elm. Another applicant, former Cedar Hill quarterback Marcus Herford, just accepted a job as the offensive coordinator of a team in Italy. DeSoto assistant Terrance Orr II said in a text message that he had removed his name from the application process. Wednesday night, DeSoto was expected to finish its interviews for a job that came open when Peterman announced that he was stepping down after compiling a record of 32-8 over the last three seasons. When asked about the difference in the number of applicants that Davis cited, DeSoto ISD communications director Tiffanie Blackmon-Jones said in an email Wednesday that "we aim to identify the best possible candidate for each employment opportunity in DeSoto ISD. Because of this, the district often utilizes a soft closing on postings and considers all highly qualified and well-experienced candidates." Harrison, who is in his seventh season at DeSoto and also coaches the freshman team, said he was scheduled to interview for DeSoto's head coaching job Wednesday. Several DeSoto players have said they think Harrison is the best candidate for the job, and he said "I didn't want to turn my back on them and not try to get the job." "I started out at DeSoto East, one of the middle schools here," Harrison said. "Most of the kids that are in the program right now, I've either coached as a freshman head coach or coached in junior high." DeSoto finished the 2016 football season ranked No. 3 in the nation by USA Today. Last season, after a 7-0 start, DeSoto was ranked No. 4 nationally by MaxPreps.com before finishing 10-2. But the number of applicants for the DeSoto job pales in comparison to others in the Dallas area. A big difference could be tied to what DeSoto's head coach had to deal with off the field. Four months after winning the state championship, Peterman thought he might lose his job. On the day of an April school board meeting, a source close to the program said four of the DeSoto ISD's seven trustees were expected to vote against Peterman's renewal that night. Until that day, Peterman said, he had "no inkling" that his job was in jeopardy. His contract was eventually renewed. "DeSoto has got the kids to go win a state championship or two in the next three years," Peterman said. Red Oak had 165 applicants and Wylie East had approximately 75 applicants for their football head coaching jobs this offseason, their school districts said. Both schools are coming off 2-8 seasons. Frisco Memorial, which won't play its first season of varsity football until next season, had 62 applicants vying to be the school's first head coach, Frisco ISD athletic director David Kuykendall said. Three-time state champion Cedar Hill -- DeSoto's biggest rival -- had close to 100 applicants for its head coaching opening after Joey McGuire left in December 2016 to become a Baylor assistant, according to Cedar Hill ISD athletic director Gina Farmer. "Any big job, people tend not to go after those, because they feel like they may not have an opportunity there, or they feel like [the school] may have their guy," Little Elm's Brown said. Harris was relieved of his duties effective immediately, and the board voted to initiate an investigation to review concerns regarding the duties and performance of the superintendent. "Everybody was caught off guard. Nobody really knew what was going on," Harrison said. "If they're trying to keep the program running, they're going to have to start getting somebody in here, whether it's me or whomever, so they can settle the kids down a little bit. There is a lot of uncertainty going on around here." Where does DeSoto go from here? In addition to Harrison, another local coach in the running is Duncanville offensive coordinator Herman Johnson. When asked about the job Tuesday, Johnson said in a direct message on Twitter, "I am a candidate and for the time being I would like to leave it at that." When asked what he would say to people in the DeSoto community who are questioning the state of the football program and how things have played out with the coaching search and the superintendent's situation, Davis said, "That's a great question. I really don't have an answer for that right now."

I'm thinking that if it's me doing the hiring, I'm going with Johnson unless he has had a prior head coach stint that didn't turn out well and isn't mentioned here. Grainraiser
It sure as hell ain't Robinson. It has been years since North Mesquite was any good. I don't know the man personally but he has not impressed me as a coach.

Honestly I thought it was gonna be Brandon Harrison the assistant Head Coach who also put his name in the hat and that seems to be who the kids wanted. 7 sevens in and coaches the Freshmen. With that said I would think the Duncanville Coach Johnson as well. More so the proximity to D'ville and understanding the community and expectations. Horsefly
The football resumes of the 3 finalists are unimpressive, I smell trouble brewing for Desoto, this may be the end of the road for this program.
