GA HSFB: is it time for Ron Gartrell to retire?

Stephenson Jaguars HC Ron Gartrell  has a long coaching history.

He has been at Stephenson since 1996.

Before Stephenson he was at Shamrock HS(Now Closed).

He coached at Shamrock for 8 years before going to Stephenson.

Fun facts about Gartrell.

He has only had 1 losing season and 1 .500 season

He has always put out  D1 athletes no matter where he was.

But the bad part is... He has never won a state title...

Ron has had a good run.

Stephenson under Rons leadership as a whole has put out more D1 talent than most top 25 schools STA included.

IMO

Yes. Ron has done alot he has done more than half of the top coaches in the nation.

Despite the lack of state titles he by himself has put more kids in College programs than a vast majority of HS.

But I think its time for him to retire.

If he does leave, they should really work on finding the coach that can take them to the next level. Everything I've ever seen/heard/read about Stephenson is that they have the talent to compete with anyone.

Rons shoes would be hard to fill...

But Dekalb county suffers because not alot of coaches wanna coach there....

I dont wanna get it wrong but from what Ive heard...

Dekalb is kinda like the Palm Beach/S.FL schools in a sense... Great schools tons of Great Athletes but the county does not pay out a lot.... If I remember Correct there has been times where Tucker had to practice using the headlights from coaches cars....

I say NO, Coach Gantrell is a stand up kind of guy who does one hell of a job getting kids into college.  He is a very good coach and motivator and kids buy into his program.  I had a chance to meet him personally in 2005 while Ken Hale Jr played there and was deciding on Delaware as a college option, Gantrell was really cool how he handled things with his kids.  Now with that said, would people say he underachieves, sure with the talent he has some might think he should be in the state title game every season; however, remember that some of his best teams ran into Gwinnett Co buzzsaws but his teams gave those buzzsaws all they could handle.  Heck one of his best teams, prob 2001, ran into Valdosta and Parkview that season and gave both all they could handle.

This is true....

Steohenson will win one before He goes though... I feel it.

To Sausmann's point,

Gartrell will work his ass off to get you to college. He makes sure every kid is represented equally from NCAA D1 to NAIA and D3. He is also a very good man from what I've read.

That said, he's not winning you a championship. It's up to the AD/community decide what means more. (They've clearly accepted their decision)

What he needs is a better OC and/or DC but again remember many of his kids don't always go through the same/best youth programs either, he's still "shaping" some of his kids but at other schools those kids are already "shaped" by the time they reach high school ball..  He's taking what he gets and still making things happen.  I may move him around in the program but I would never get rid of him.  He might be the reason some of the better athletes stay as a Jag.  Weren't the Ball bros. being heavily "swayed" back in 01/02 time frame and they stayed b/c of RG.

Colquitt's only experience with Gartrell and Stephenson came in 2009! When a grossly undermanned Packer team, managed to fashion out a 22-21 upset win at Hallford Stadium in Stone Mountain! Talent wise, this Stephenson team was arguably one of the best in GHSA history! Coach ProPst has said many times, that that Stephenson D was the best he ever saw! But call it arrogance, lack of preparation, or the aligning of the planets! But the Packers prevailed with a 100 yards total offense! They scored on a PICK SIX, a forty yard FG after a turnover, and a forty yard screen pass to the ONE, where we got one of those FG'S!! And two KO returns of 75 and 83 yards to set up short scoring drives! For some reason, Stephenson was HELL BENT to prove that they could stop SUPER MAN(Quin Roberson) from returning those kicks!xD

And about Stephenson or anybody ELSE in metro's talent pool! Does ANYBODY in their right mind, think that ANY of these metro schools play with the talent in their crappy lil districts? The SAME thing happened to Franklin Stephens at Tucker! BAD to da BONE in metro! Then, he goes into the swampland of Ware Co., and he DISAPPEARS! Cause Waycross ain't close to NUTTIN that he could tap into, talent wise!

While having some very good staffs during his tenure in DeKalb county! Gartrell appears to have mental implosions in crunch time! THUS, his shortcomings in the playoffs!

But it's POSSIBLE to have BOTH, like they do in Moultrie!:)

Heres the difference...

No one holds Stephenson to the standards that STA is held too.

Ask the local fans and you may get a different reply...  you see nobody knows who STA is for the most part from other states.  Nobody cares.  On this forum STA, DLS, DBP, etc. mean something.   We are a very small and twisted group of fans who follow national hs football (some of us here don't even do that... just follow one state and homer it).  If Gartrell didn't squander talent as the #1 example, they'd have higher standards from more folks.

I try to keep up with them, to see who they have stolen recently! I remember when the best WR in FSU history, was stolen from Albany, Ga., soon to arrive at STA!
