Prog8r
I am curious what is happening with the new classes in FL? Can schools play up or down? How is this going to affect smaller schools, BTW, COCOA, GLADES, TRINITY, etc...
sportsnut25
2017 wasn't supposed to be a reclassification year so there wasn't much change in teams moving up or down classes in terms of teams already playing for state trophies. A solid amount of independent teams that had opted to not play in a district and not play for a state title decided to rejoin district play because of the new playoff system. 1A-4A no longer is mandated to play district teams while 5A-8A is. Some teams (3A Jax Trinity and 4A Bolles for example) asked to move to 5A so they could be in a district. We'll redo the classifications officially in 2019 which is when we'll actually look at the enrollment numbers. As far as if a school wants to play down, it has to be for a VERY good reason (usually travel costs is the only thing that gets approval). Moving up a class is taken on a case-by-case basis.
Columbiafan
Bolles and trinty Christian both elected to jump to 5a but not sure of the other major changes it led to
Prog8r
Thank you, I think it was the restructure of the district play that was confusing me. Cocoa and BTW will no longer have to schedule district play and they can still make state?

Guest
What are the classification cutoff numbers in Florida?
sportsnut25
Class 8A - 2,332-4,492 Class 7A - 1,939-2,331 Class 6A - 1,593-1,938 Class 5A - 1,115-1,592 Class 4A - 681-1,114 Class 3A - 291-680 Class 2A - 1-290 Class 1A - 1-600 ** Class 1A is considered the "rural" classification so if you are in the middle of nowhere and have 600 or fewer kids you can request to play in 1A.
