Top 10 Out Of State Games for California
The top California teams have traditionally done a good job of scheduling out of state teams and this year is no exception. The top four teams in California have scheduled at least one game against a team ranked top 5 nationally. With 4 other opponents appearing in national top 25 rankings, California's mettle will certainly be challenged. Here is how the top 10 out of state opponents for California stack up.
- Bishop Gorman (NV): The three time defending USA Today National Champion take their 54 game winning streak into a season that features a schedule with two long time California powerhouses, @Mater Dei (9/1) and De La Salle (9/16). Bishop Gorman is Number 1 in Nevada and ranked as high as Number 2 in Maxpreps Xcellent 25.
- IMG (FL): The sports academy powerhouse has not shied away from taking on anyone, anywhere. The Ascenders return to California to take on Centennial (Corona) on 9/2 in a rematch of their thrilling contest from 2016. IMG is ranked as high as Number 2 in USA Today's Top 25 preseason ranking.
- St. Thomas Aquinas (FL): The defending 7A champions once again host a California team when they take on defending California Open Division Champion, St. John Bosco on 8/25. They'll have something in common when they meet as both teams last wins against California teams came against De La Salle. St. Thomas slips in at Number 5 in both the USA Today and Maxpreps rankings.
- Bergen Catholic (NJ): The Crusaders are no stranger to the West Coast as they handed Bishop Gorman a 42-35 loss back in 2012. They return on 9/16 to take on highly touted Mater Dei. Bergen Catholic appears in the top 20 of all currently released preseason rankings showing as high as #9 in the Maxpreps Xcellent 25.
- St. John's College (DC): A talented Cadets squad comes to Concord on 9/1 to take on De La Salle in a battle between a Nike Elite School and an Under Armour Undeniable School. St. John's makes its appearance at Number 21 in the USA Today Super 25 poll.
- Loyola Academy (IL): Loyola Academy will host the Lancers of Bishop Amat on 9/1. This will be the first time Bishop Amat travels out of state since 2014 when it made a trip out to Texas. The Ramblers make a showing at Number 23 in the High School Football America Top 100.
- St. Louis (HI): The defending champions from Hawaii and Preseason Number 1 at Hawaii Prep World will once again host a California team when they take on LA Section mainstay Narbonne on 9/23. While public school rival, Kahuku, is featured at Number 25 in USA Today, St. Louis slides into Number 21 in the Maxpreps Freeman rankings.
- Mountain Pointe (AZ): Mountain Pointe continues the trend of top California teams battling it out against top Arizona teams. With a 52-7 win earlier in the season, Mountain View looked to be in the driver seat going into last year's 6A Arizona State Championship against rival Chandler. The Pride, however, fell to Chandler 36-17 and with that lost all the spoils (trip to the Geico State Champions Bowl Series and early season accolades). With a number of players returning on both sides of the ball, the Pride look to get revenge. First, however, they take on Chaminade one week earlier on 9/7 in a potential trap game.
- Colquitt (GA): After consecutive AAAAAA championships, Colquitt found themselves looking on from the outside during last years 7A Championship. This year Colquitt looks to return to the Georgia Dome, but will first host several out of state opponents, including Vista Murrieta on 8/25. The game against Vista Murrieta will mark the first time since 2010 that two programs from each state will meet.
- Punahou (HI): Sliding into the tenth spot is traditional Hawaii power, Punahou. The high school of the 44th President sits third behind St. Louis and Kahuku in the Hawaii state rankings. The Buff n' Blue have a date with Torrey Pines on 8/25 at Aloha Stadium and return the favor by playing Serra on the following weekend, 9/2, in California.
Honorable Mention: American Fork (UT), Timpview (UT), Couer D'Ilene (ID)
