Decided to stop being a hater and embrace the best team in Maryland, Saint...

John's Catholic Prep from Buckeystown. The only football team to win a national championship on the field in 2019. And look at this beautiful field they played the championship game on! 2019 NACA Champs!!!

Never mind that they were 5-6 on the year. Never mind that one of those five wins was a forfeit. Never mind that the Tennessee HEAT team they beat in the national championship game was an 8-man home school football team that went 5-8 on the season. A stellar 21-8 win over Advancing Christ Through Sports Home School put them into the national championship picture. They racked up six quality losses to such stellar teams as 4-7 Central Maryland Christian Crusaders Home School (42-20), 5-5 2A public school Overlea (60-0) and 5-5 1A public school Clear Spring (48-6).

Congrats to Maryland's first-ever national champions! Take that Poggi!

Saint John's Catholic Prep also plays at a facility fit for national champs, a former NFL venue, McCurdy Field in Frederick. Built in 1924 as a minor league baseball park, it hosted the Washington Redskins first ever game after moving from Boston, a preseason matchup against the Frederick YMCA. With such features as a gravel warning track running through the playing field from the 10-yard line into the end zone, the football scoreboard located conveniently behind the football stands so you have to turn around every time you want to check the time or score, and a pressbox so low to the ground that the PA announcer yells at you through the open window until you sit down, McCurdy Field offers a spectacular environment for a football game.

They look like a team that could not compete in the MIAA "C" division. Which they were.

They were fine in the C, won a couple championships in the league just a couple years ago but the C disbanded after Friends and Mount Carmel couldn't field teams and AACS and Concordia Prep wanted to move up. They would not have been fine in the B so they went independent. The C Conference was absolutely terrible however. The drop from A to B was like FBS to FCS. The drop from B to C was like FCS to British University/College Sports Football. The rough equivalent for the WCAC would be having a 3rd Division including Sidwell Friends, Fredericksburg Christian and Saint John Paul the Great.

A few years back I saw Trevon Diggs and Avalon play SJCP at old McCurdy Field. Him vs. the SJCP DBs was about as bad of an individual mismatch as I've ever seen in football.

SJCP was decent for a number of years...beat the likes of Pallotti (with a young Chase Young and other d1 players) and Bullis. When Coach Ricca started the program and his son was setting state passing records they were a competitive MIAA -B team. They went downhill after Ricca left four or five years ago.

There's a third son in between these two (JD) who set passing records at Hamden-Sydney College...I saw the older two play in HS for SJC...both were terrific players but not heavily recruited due to size ...the youngest was 6'4 and could have played at several D1 schools but followed his brother to Catholic. Great football family.
