Apparently the refs are using a “2 step” standard without stumbling to establish possession.

On the field, people like the “survive the ground” rule - people were upset about people bobbling the ball on contact with the ground and being awarded a catch. So the rule should be easier cause it is the EZ? That does not make sense. You do not have a controlled catch until you survive the ground. That is the point. Sure it does. Makes total sense. For example, if a rb jumps in the air and breaks the plane of the end zone it's a touchdown. Doesn't matter if, after he broke the plane, the ball is stripped by a defender. If a rb does this on fourth and 1 at the 20, but the ball is stripped on the way down, it's a fumble. There is a difference or they wouldn't have the "break the plane of the endzone rule". So if you are on the field, you have to survive the ground. If you are wholly in the EZ, you have to survive the ground. But if you are crossing the goal line while in the process of catching the ball - you don’t. Got it.
181pl
that's the problem. He wasn't in the process of a catch. That's such made up bullshit. He had both hands on the ball and possessed it then both of his knees came down. then his body crossed the goal line. that's a touchdown. If after securing the ball in the air with both hands, and controlling it, and then having both knees down, without being touched and then crossing the goal line, if afterwards the ball comes loose because he impacted with the ground it shouldn't matter. Now if he was juggling the ball before he got to the ground that would be an issue. But in this case he had clear control of the ball both knees down his body broke the plane of the goal line. And then the ground caused the ball to move when he hit it with both his hands in the ball. I'd also add that the hand never came out from under the ball. What a terrible call. This is why the NFL sucks. It should not be this difficult to say catch, touchdown.
