The overall polling on abortion is irrelevant. Single issue abortion voters are heavily GOP. Winning the Catholic vote in the Rust Belt is key to a GOP win in those states. Biden disavowing the Hyde Amendment could be a huge negative there. Now if the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, that could change the politics a lot. Fact is the pro-life position has gained the GOP millions of net votes. The Hyde Amendment has the potential to be a serious wedge issue with Catholics - a fact which Matthews, a Catholic from Pennsylvania, understands very well.
