I was fortunate to spend half the day on Wednesday at St. John Bosco for a light morning workout for the players and time speaking with the impressive staff they have there. Bosco is a high school program being run as much like a college program as it can be. So much attention to detail is spent on every aspect of the players/football program. If a kid attends St. John Bosco, he is well taken care of in that he will have the necessary help aid in his success.

They have a student body of about 900 kids, 85% are involved in athletics (many multi-sport athletes) and 95% go onto four-year colleges. The latter is just an insane percentage to wrap my head around. And believe me, St. John Bosco prides itself as much/more on what kids do academically as athletically, although both are celebrated greatly for good reason.

While it's a huge focus and full-time job for the staff to do all they can to provide exposure for their football players in the pursuit of scholarship offers, they consistently tell the kids it's ultimately up to them to work hard and earn the scholarships. And even though many lof their kids end up with huge D-I offers, the impressive staff at Bosco works just as hard for the kids who get offers from smaller programs/D-II programs and even JC's. "All scholarship offers are huge offers in our eyes," DBs coach/recruiting coordinator Jonathan Hall said.

And then they have players who end up at Yale, Harvard, Cornell etc. It's just a well-rounded school/football program for kids pursuing a variety of dreams. They're also doing it without an unlimited budget as Bishop Gorman does in Las Vegas and without, at least for now, wealthy alums who have made it huge in the NFL. That will certainly be happening in the near future.

So back to operating as much like a college program as possible. Head coach Jason Negro could be coaching in college and has had opportunities come his way, the job security as a the head football coach of the Braves is more appealing at this point for the 43 year old coach. Negro has made it a priority to schedule the top high school football programs in the nation during its pre-season. Thedule they play is also rigid, as is the path to the state championship in the Pac-5 conference. St. John Bosco can't attract out-of-state kids and provide housing for them, but there are kids like elite S and Ohio State commit Jaiden Woodbey who travels from Fontana to Bellflower each week. OL Cole Sain just transferred from Riverside and he couldn't be happier.

It also doesn't hurt a young football player's chances of getting a scholarship when 70+ college coaches visit a high school campus annually, and that's how many visited St. John Bosco in 2016. "We had 40+ coaches at the school for the College Showcase last year," said Hall. The College Showcase at Bosco is an event where college coaches are invited to the school one day during the Spring Evaluation Period, to meet with the players, coaches and family members in attendance. Multiple schools have events like this now, but the BBQ served at Bosco that day is often talked about. I will find out for myself this year.

Now back to the topic of Woodbey being committed to Ohio State and not considering USC or UCLA heavily, USC hasn't made St. John Bosco a priority school as much as UCLA, but Woodbey understands USC brought in two elite safeties in Bubba Bolden and Isaiah Pola-Mao in the 2017 class. But he also believes an opportunity to play for Urban Meyer enhances is chances of living out his dream of playing in the NFL. Bosco OG Wyatt Davis also believed his path to the NFL was greater in Columbus versus Los Angeles. Hard to find any fault in that belief considering the track record Urban Meyer has. But USC never made Wyatt Davis a huge priority, at least in his eyes and while that more than likely wouldn't have made a difference, "It couldn't have hurt," said one coach.

These are just some notes from my morning spent at Bosco Wednesday. There is plenty more to talk about regarding this elite football powerhouse and we plan to head back to Bosco next week to shoot video/photos and talk to numerous players.

Bosco will read their press clippings and get fat on the publicity.

Then our once in a generation offense will torch them and we will win the Trinity League AGAIN for the second consecutive year.

Ok but what about the playoffs?

Ceb10 will take SJB out this time in the semi's.  We will get MV in the semi's and then beat Cen10 like we always do.  Then DLs will get their Red Reckoning that they have been dodging for 20 years

Ha , that was your plan last year.Hope it goes better this time around

Yes it will be much different.  Last year we played soft preseason because we started mainly sophs.  We were too young and were not ready for the playoffs.

This year we made adjustments and play a preseason that will temper our steel for the playoffs.  You will see.  Have faith in the three stripes.
