NorCal top game:

Folsom vs Rocklin

Folsom is licking their wounds after falling to De La Salle 31-10 last week.  To make matters worse, starting QB Tyler Tremain is reportedly still injured and will miss this week's contest.  The Bulldog offensive line was a bit overwhelmed by the Spartans, so they'll have to make improvements to protect the understudy.  Any hope at all at getting another shot against DLS in a NorCal D-1AA regional depends on them running the table for the rest of the year.  Even then, the CIF voters could opt to avoid a rematch and put up the Central Section D-I winner to oppose the Spartans.  In their six wins, Folsom averaged 144 yards rushing per game, but only managed 2 (yes, two) against DLS.  Not only is Tremain obviously the Bulldog's leading passer, but he is also their second leading rusher.  Junior Carter Martinelli (who also left last week's game with an injury) is slated to start.

Rocklin has been an interesting story this year and up until a couple of weeks ago, they were being considered a legit threat to Folsom in the Sierra Foothill League and SJS D-I playoffs.  Those hopes seemed to be dashed when starting QB Kenny Lueth went down with an injury.  While backup Joey Roberts has done a nice job as a replacement, the offensive numbers have dropped a fair amount (pre-injury average of 46 ppg vs post-injury average of 23.5 ppg).  The defense has remained very stiff, only allowing an average of 5.1 ppg.  Now that neither starting QBs are expected to play, this week's game is looking like more of a fair fight.  In addition to the likely SFL title, also at risk is a potential berth into the SJS D-I playoffs.  Rocklin is D-II by enrollment, but D-I league champions automatically get moved up to the top division.

Other interesting games:

De La Salle vs San Ramon California... This game may not have been especially on the radar initially, but now there are reports that Coach Alumbaugh and a few players are slated to miss this game due to positive COVID tests.  California has been starting to get some attention due to their 6-0 start, although most would consider them to only have one quality win (last week, 19-18, over Clayton Valley Charter).

Central Catholic vs Manteca... Central Catholic thrashed previously unbeaten Tracy Kimball 55-16 last week and now they face another unbeaten opponent.  Manteca stands at 7-0, but their most significant win came way back in week 0 against 6-1 Modesto Downey.

San Mateo Serra vs Valley Christian... Serra is considered either #1 or 3 in NorCal, depending on the poll, but only has had one real significant win so far (41-7 over Bellarmine).  4-2 Valley Christian actually led St. Francis for a short while last week before the Lancers took over for a 41-27 win.

SoCal top game:

Corona Centennial vs Norco

Centennial has been absolutely rolling this year, scoring a multitude of big wins during their non-league schedule.  Competition in the Big VIII League?  Well, that brings us to this week against Norco.  One of the criticisms that has been historically thrown at the Huskies is the lack of defense to match their explosive offense.  This year appears to definitely be an exception, as they have only allowed an average of 9.8 ppg overall, including 11 ppg against their very strong non-league opponents.  Two QBs are again leading the offensive charge, although junior Izzy Carter appears to be a little more effective in terms of TD-INT differential (6-1 vs 8-4), but junior Carson Conklin has a slightly higher completion percentage (57.8% vs 55.7%).  One of the signs that an offense is truly remarkable is that the coaches get to give a lot of different players opportunities to contribute in different ways.  In this case, Coach Logan has had an astounding seven different players throw passes so far.

Norco has bounced back (sort of) from their loss to Sierra Canyon three weeks ago by beating up on two weaker Big VIII opponents.  Although the Cougars' non-league schedule wasn't quite that of the Huskies, they do have a number of significant wins.  The most important of which was 40-22 against Santa Margarita.  Unless there is a tremendous upset to Eastvale Roosevelt at the end of the regular season, Norco will end up being placed in the SS D-I playoffs.  A loss this week would not likely impact that, but a win could potentially push them up to as high as maybe a 5th seed (right now, they're about 7).  QB Kyle Crum continues to have a stellar year, completing 67.6% of his passes, as well as being the #2 rusher on the team with 383 yards.  Norco did secure a win over Centennial in the shortened COVID spring season earlier this year and will be looking to try to demonstrate that wasn't a fluke.

Other interesting games:

Mater Dei vs Santa Margarita... Mater Dei has a final tune-up before getting their final true Trinity League challenger, Servite.  In an odd quirk, the loss to Servite last week actually slightly boosted Santa Margarita's chances of remaining in the SS D-I field, despite a team they defeated (Los Alamitos) nipping at their heels.

Alemany vs Bishop Amat... Alemany has taken some lumps against some powerhouses this year, but remain in position to take control of the Mission League lead with a win this week.  Bishop Amat was similarly beat up by two Trinity League opponents, but has started 2-0 in Mission League play.

Huntington Beach Edison vs Corona del Mar... Edison looks to secure 2nd place in the Sunset League, as well as potentially a top-4 seed in the SS D-II playoffs with the help of a win this week.  Corona del Mar took a bad loss to Los Alamitos two weeks ago (42-14), but can still take the lead for 2nd place in the Sunset League with a win over the Chargers.

Sadly, Logan Webb's calendar just opened up.  Maybe he could take his old spot back...

Nice writeup...as always.
