Ohio Week 6

Some statement games over the weekend see a new number one in the Buckeye state.

1. Hoban (#2, beat Ignatius 35-0) - The best defense in the state made another statement in blanking the Wildcats. Yes, this Ignatius team is young and without it's best playmaker, but a shut out is still impressive.  Massillon might deserve this spot after their victory over St. Edward, but Hoban has had their number in recent years and I'm giving the Knights the nod. They are on a bye this week as their archrival St. Vincent St. Mary decided to drop the football series (what a bunch of cry babies BTW). Apparently they don't like the way Hoban "recruits" (which, ironically, is exactly how the SVSM hoops team has been run for decades). BYE

2. Massillon (#3, beat St. Edward 15-13) - For the second year in a row, Massillon played spoiler to the D1 giant. Probably not a spoiler this year though, as the odds makers actually had Massillon as the favorite in light of Ed's QB not playing. The game was close, and Ed's had their opportunities, but Massillon controlled the LOS on both sides throughout this game and rode the legs of Owens to victory. It's Canton or bust for the Tigers. They host two out-of-state opponents the next two weeks before going on the road for the first time this year in week 8. vs. Middletown (DE) on 9/22

3. St. Edward (#1, lost to Massillon 15-13) - Back to the drawing board after two weeks of subpar defensive play and one week of poor offensive line play. QB1 Bullock is out for at least the remainder of the regular season and perhaps beyond. A major portion of the St. Edward offense (the read option) will be to be revamped to cater to junior Thomas Csanyi's skill set. The good news is that he is a more natural passer than Bullock and the Eagles do have weapons at receiver in Sullivan, Mason (currently injured), Hackleman, and two solid TE's.  We'll really see Lombardo's play-calling chops put to the test. The quick fix needs to be on defense though, primarily at LB and safety, where misreads and missed tackles have abounded the last two weeks. The "softer" potion of the schedule the next few weeks should allow the staff to put the adjustments in place. vs. River Rouge (MI) on 9/23

4. TCC (#4, beat De La Salle (MI) 28-23) - Closer than expected game against Warren De La Salle (MI), but not enough to concern me at this point. TCC his host a reeling Ignatius team this weekend. vs. Ignatius on 9/22

5. Avon (#5, beat North Ridgeville 38-7) - Dismantled a North Ridgeville team that got off to a surprise 4-0 start. Avon is legit and a serious threat in a top-loaded D2. vs. Olmsted Falls on 9/22

6. Gahanna-Lincoln (#8, beat Pick Central 49-14) - The Golden Lions jump two spots with a thorough beating of Pick Central, who came off a close loss to PN. The reigning R3 champs could be primed for another run. They will have to avoid complacency the next few weeks with four opponents with a combined 6-14 record before a huge week 10 showdown with Pick North. vs. Westland on 9/22

7. Pick North (#6, beat Pick Central 39-34) - Like GL, North has a weak stretch of the schedule before week 10 where both schools should be undefeated and vying for the R3 one seed.  vs. Westerville Central on 9/22.

8. Glenville (#7, lost to IMG 28-6) - The final score was not outrageous, but IMG controlled throughout and had their second team in later in the game (which is still probably better than Glenville's first team). The only litmus test that remains on the schedule now is a week 8 game against Hoban. vs. John Hay on 9/22

9. Elder (others, beat St. X (KY) 31-21) - Impressive road win over Kentucky's previously #1 rated team. Coupled with the two coin-flip games against Ed's and PN, the Panthers body of work is more impressive than Princeton or WW to date. No time to rest on their laurels with X and Moeller on deck. @ St. X on 9/22.

10. Princeton (#9, beat Hamilton 22-16) - Princeton stays in my top 10 while WW falls out. Nothing against WW who dominated this week, but the Vikings have more quality wins to date. @ Oak Hills on 9/22

Others: Winton Woods, Moeller, X, Olentangy, Cleveland Heights, Hudson, Lakota West, Riverside, Canton McKinley, Walsh Jesuit, Centerville, Withrow, Hilliard Bradley, Milford, Youngstown Ursuline

Ironically Cle.com still has Ed’s as #1

i have no issues either way since it’s like splitting hairs.

Bullock rumored to have a dislocated knee cap which generally takes 6-8 weeks to heal. Lombardo in his pregame conference mentioned he thought Bullock could return this year. Hopefully sooner than later.

I too was surprised by the lack of production by both lines.

Be great if he can return and finish what he started with his teammates, but you’d also have to question whether it’s wise to throw him in there in the middle of a playoff run (especially if Csanyi is playing well). Let’s hope it’s six rather than eight weeks.

As far as the polls, I can see Ed’s remaining #1 in the PD coverage area with Massillon not being included. I was more surprised to see them remain in the maxpreps top 25. Usually Ohio schools are given no margin for error. Having two ranked is a rarity.

How does Csayni look? Thanks

Coming along. He’s a more natural thrower than Bullock. Enough athleticism to run as well, and picked up some good yards on the ground today. They didn’t want to run him at all last week for fear of another injury. He didn’t play second half today.
