Ohio Week 10

Hard to believe it, but week 10 is here. The playoff picture is largely settled, but a number of teams (Hoban, Eds, GL, Pick North) can make a statement this week with some marquee matchups of top ten teams.

1. Hoban (#1, beat St. Francis (NY) 28-13) - Not exactly a statement win against a 2-5 St. Francis team. Was it the road trip or looking ahead to this week's showdown with Ed's? Either way, they should be focused for this one. Hoban has clinched the one seed, but this is more about bragging rights.  These two programs have been at the top of the mountain for the better part of a decade now, and have become the destination schools for middle school talent in NEO. Trying to win over the hearts and minds of the next generation certainly has to be in the back of both coach's minds. With no potential playoff matchup there is no reason to pull punches, but both programs also want to come out of this healthy for their respective playoff runs. Will be strength on strength with the Hoban defensive front seven and Ed's OL slugging it out in the trenches. vs. St. Edward on 10/20

2. Massillon (#2, beat WGH 48-14) -  McKinley week.  The #1 is clinched, so like Hoban, this is a bragging rights game. The Tigers should be double digit favorites despite McKinley having a solid squad this year. @ Canton McKinley on 10/21.

3. St. Edward (#3, beat Moeller 28-21) - The Eagles continued their regular season dominance over Moeller, but nearly let a 28-6 4th quarter lead evaporate.  Sophomore RB Brandon White had his best outing to date going for 330 all-purpose yards (262 on the ground) and 2 TD's. The kid will challenge the St. Edward record books over the next few years and, if he grows (currently about 5'8 170), will be a power 5 prospect. Hoban will pose the biggest challenge to date with how strong they are up front on defense and at LB. Ed's has won 3 of the past 4 against the Knights. @ Hoban on 10/20.

4. TCC (#4, beat TSFD 69-0) - The Irish hope to wrap up an undefeated regular season with a neutral site game against Detroit's Cass Tech.  If nothing else, Cass Tech will have the athletes to make things interesting. They have won their past 6 games after starting the year 0-2, including a pasting at the hands of SJR (NJ). vs. Cass Tech (MI) on 10/21

5. Avon (#5, beat Amherst 63-28) - Avon slept through the first half against Amherst, only to explode down the stretch to make this game a blowout. Might have been looking ahead to their rivalry game with Avon Lake which is being played in week 10 this year as opposed to the early season matchup these two have traditionally played. AL is not having their best year, but their 3 losses are all to quality teams (Chardon, Olmsted Falls, and North Ridgeville). AL will give them their best shot, but I don't think it will be nearly enough against Avon's best team in years. vs. Avon Lake on 10/20.

6. Gahanna-Lincoln (#6, beat Grove City 56-28) - The moment is finally upon us as GL will play host to Pick North this week for Columbus-area supremacy. Knowing that a rematch could await in the playoffs, it remains to be seen whether either team goes all in. vs. Pick North on 10/20.

7. Pick North (#7, New Albany 21-17) - See above. @ Gahanna-Lincoln on 10/20.

8. Moeller (#8, lost to St. Edward 28-21) - A resurgent Moeller took their 4-game win streak on the road to Lakewood, but came up just short in the end.  The Crusaders looked to have shored up the defensive issues that saw them giving up close to 40/game against the Indiana trio, but the Ed's o-line and Brandon White gave them fits most of the day. Losing Marshall for the second half did not help, but the sophomore QB Ponatoski went to the air and was able to connect with Jovon Love on two long scoring drives.  Hopefully the Marshall injury isn't long term because he will be essential to Moeller's hopes of winning R4. @ Detroit King (MI) on 10/20.

9. Glenville (#10, beat JFK 41-0) - The only question that really remains for the Tarblooders is the status of several transfer players heading into the playoffs. If any of their transfers is deemed to have been ineligible to play for Glenville and they are forced to forfeit several games, their playoff status could be in jeopardy. If they get cleared then they are back to being a heavy favorite to repeat in DIV. @ John Marshall on 10/20

10. Hilliard Bradley (others, beat Olentangy Orange 28-7) - Bradley has somewhat quietly rolled to a 9-0 record, largely on the strength of their defense. I gave them the nod over Princeton for what I believe to be a better overall strength of schedule. The GMC looks down this year. While Bradley avoided having to play Gahanna or either of Pickerington schools in the regular season, they should be squarely in the mix in a competitive R3.  vs. Dublin Coffman on 10/20.

Others: Princeton, Olentangy Berlin, Olentangy, Cleveland Heights, Elder, X, Lakota West, Centerville, Withrow, Milford, Youngstown Ursuline, Anderson, Walsh Jesuit, Pick Central, Bishop Watterson, Winton Woods

St. Ed’s offense with some big mistakes early.  Eds D stops Hoban’s opening drive, but then on Eds first series. Hoban returns an Eds fumble for TD.  And now Bullock throws an INT on the next series.  Not exactly the start they wanted on offense.

Bullock threw 7 yd pick 6 then Masons HB pass tipped off WR for INT
