Some additional info.

First of all too many championships are awarded in NC, as in many other states.  Too many teams make the playoffs.  It is what it is and there were some great games but splitting the classifications leaves questions.  378 football playing schools in the NCHSAA.

Cherokee HS is a federal government school located on the Cherokee Reservation in far western NC.  They play in a very tough small school conference that makes a play for a title every year in the 1A subclasses.  East Duplin was undefeated entering.

Tarboro was loaded.  They were the favorites all year.

Wallace Rose Hill won 1AA last year.  Back to 2A classification in the first year of the four year realignment.  Their only loss was to conference and county foe East Duplin.  They beat Havelock early in the year.  Defending champion Reidsville is NC football royalty and was projected as the winner early on.  WRH is coached by new HC Kevin Motsinger, a former Hoover assistant for Rush Propst.

Hibriten lost big in the 3A Western Regional final last year.  They dropped to the 2A class and beat four time defending state champ Shelby in the Western Regional final.  ED was undefeated entering.

Catholic rolled with probably their best team ever.  They do not look like state champions getting off the bus but they come up through the middle school running their wing T and misdirection, aggressive football.  One of only three non boarding Parochial in the public school league.  They played in a tough conference and from all accounts were too physical for Havelock.

New Hanover's former HC returned after a several years absence and lost only to rival Hoggard (which lost to Scotland county in the regional final).  Reynolds got a bad call on a TD reception that nullified a score and seemed to turn the tide a bit from a few friends there.

Harding is the glory story!  Tom Knotts first HC job where he turned the program around in the 1980's.  New coach took a troubled student into his home and the player is the QB and off to West Point!!!  Running back Crouch is the real deal and was big on defense as well.  Harding played without conference defensive player of the year and two other all conference defenders due to injury.  Dressed about 38.  A lot of misdirection, tosses, flips, QB receiving the ball, et al.  Scotland, like, Harding lost only to Mallard Creek.  Superstar RB Zeus White, UGA commit, was lost a few weeks ago with ACL tear.

Mallard Creek's offense has been non existent recently.  Wake Forest scored three TDs in the last five minutes and had 80% of their yardage in the second half and over half of that came in the final six minutes.  MC botched a snap on first and goal that cost them 25 yards and on a punt that gave WF the ball on the ten.  MC returned three starters this year and look strong next year.  Defending champion WF loses a lot but they are a strong program that were knocking on the door for several years.

Bormio, you think Scotland wouldve beaten Harding if they had Zeus??

He is the best high school running back I have ever seen and I have watched a lot of them over the years.  Complete package.  Crouch, from Harding, is only a junior and he is a special and unique.  Bigger and more powerful than Zeus but he does not have the unreal quickness and ability to hit top end almost immediately.

Mallard Creek, with a handful of returning starters, played Scotland first game and won 28-21.  Like their title game yesterday MC missed a few opportunities early and then let Scotland get a few TDs at the very end.  Scotland had much bigger offensive numbers but MC really controlled the game.  MC beat Harding 30-9 four weeks later.  Harding fumbled near the goal line and had it returned to the house.  Huge momentum swing.  Crouch played over half the plays on D in last night and in the big games.  He also was playing with a significant injury, a deep leg bone bruise, that many thought would sideline him the last few weeks.

Per a couple of MC players, Crouch is much harder to put on the ground but Zeus is much tougher to get a hold of.
