DickTurpin
On 11/26/2023 at 2:25 PM, MA Fan said: King George doesn't play that strong of a schedule, but they have probably the best receiver duo in the state (maybe Freedom is comparable) and have been building towards playoff success for a couple years. Last year they lost an epic overtime game to Dinwiddie in the playoffs and it was Dinwiddie's only competitive game of the season. Class 4 has the most intriguing set of semifinals with Phoebus vs. King George and Salem vs. undefeated but unheralded Tuscarora. Phoebus destroyed King George"s offense today. The offense accounted for THREE points...a punt return and safety made the score seem like it was close. Phoebus started a FR at QB.

MA Fan
Virginia state championship games on Saturday, should be streamed on NFHS with good production. 11:30 starts Class 6: Freedom (13-0) vs Highland Springs (13-1)--the game everyone has been waiting to see all season. Except Highland Springs lost to Maury, so if Freedom wins then people will say they didn't beat Maury. Still, it's the most anticipated VA championship game in a while. The question for Freedom is how they hold up for 48 minutes if it's competitive--they faded badly against Varina, the DeMatha game was called in the third quarter, and they haven't had a serious challenge since. Freedom QB broke the state record for career TD passes last week. Class 4: Phoebus (14-0) vs Salem (13-1)--Phoebus has won 34 straight, their 2012-2020 title drought a distant memory now. Salem has two of the top recruits in the state and four championship trophies since 2015. Class 2: Riverheads (13-1) vs Radford (14-0)--Riverheads moved up after seven straight Class 1 championships and the only thing that has changed so far is the list of victims. Radford's QB has thrown for over 3,000 yards and run for over 1,000 this year. 5:00 starts Class 5: Maury (14-0) vs Stone Bridge (9-4)--Since 2018 the only three teams to appear in the Class 5 title game have been Maury, Stone Bridge, and Highland Springs, and now Highland Springs has moved up so this was the only possible matchup. Stone Bridge has turned it around after a brutal early schedule, but Maury has scored 819 points on the season and has 300 D1 commits so they're the heavy favorites. Class 3: Liberty Christian (13-0) vs Lafayette (12-2)--Ever since Liberty Christian was allowed into the VHSL people have been dreading the moment that they win a football championship and this is probably the year that they do it. After handing Salem their only loss in the opening game they haven't had another team come within three touchdowns. Class 1: Essex (14-0) vs Galax (10-4)--Essex had been eliminated from the playoffs by Riverheads six years in a row. Galax lost three straight title games to Riverheads from 2019-2021. Finally one of them gets to win. Three of Galax's losses were to strong teams in a higher class and the fourth they avenged in the playoffs. MA Fan
12/9 Virginia Finals Class 6: Freedom 42 Highland Springs--Freedom jumped to a 28-0 lead in the second quarter, Highland Springs came back within 35-27, but Freedom found enough offense in the fourth quarter to survive. Jeff Overton ran for 264 yards and 2 touchdowns and also threw a 53 yard TD pass. Class 5: Maury 45 Stone Bridge 34--Maury led 45-17 after three but SB had a few chances to get within one score in the fourth quarter. Class 4: Phoebus 20 Salem 14--Phoebus won with an 86-yard pass from Maurikus Banks to Keyontae Gray with one second left on the clock. Salem had tied the game with a touchdown and two-point conversion with 57 seconds remaining. Class 3: Liberty Christian 28 Lafayette 14--LCA was up 21-0 at halftime as Gideon Davidson ran for 248 of his 306 yards in the first half. Class 2: Radford 39 Riverheads 21--The streak is over! Landen Clark threw for four touchdowns and ran for another for Radford. Class 1: Galax 7 Essex 6--Galax made seven the hard way--two safeties and then Yandel Vera's 42-yard field goal off the crossbar and through with 7 seconds left.
