Ohio Week 9

Top ten heading into week 9:

1. Hoban (#1, Glenville 28-16) - An undermanned Glenville squad struck first, but Hoban responded with a kick return and three first half TD's to build a 28-8 lead at the half. The Knights were outgained on the day by the Tarblooders, but held off any hope of a comeback. They should coast to victory this weekend against St. Francis before the big showdown with Ed's in week 10. @ St. Francis (NY) on 10/14.

2. Massillon (#2, beat Fitch 42-7) - This one was never in doubt. Despite the explosive ability that the transfer Owens brought to the Massillon offense this year, it's the Tiger defense that is the real story of their season and will have them poised to take home their first playoff era title. vs. Warren Harding on 10/13.

3. St. Edward (#3, beat Football North (ON) 35-15) - The Eagles handled team Canada, but still aren't playing their best football. The mobile QB is still the achilles heel of this team, and have been susceptible at times to giving up big run plays. They will really be tested by Moeller and Jordan Marshall this week. Can't give up the cut-back lanes to someone with Marshall's explosive home run capabilities. This game could be a preview of the D1 final. vs. Moeller on 10/14

4. TCC (#4, beat OLSM (MI) 42-0) - Not much resistance so far this year from the Michigan Catholic League schools. vs. Toledo St. Francis De Sales on 10/13.

5. Avon (#5, beat Midview 45-7) - Another dominant effort, this Avon team is a legit contender to Hoban and Massillon in D2. @ Amherst on 10/13.

6. Gahanna-Lincoln (#6, beat Westerville Central 17-0) - Two sub-par offensive outings in a row, it's hard not to think GL is in cruise control until week 10. @ Grove City on 10/13

7. Pick North (#7, beat Grove City 48-10) - One more week until the game of the year in Columbus. vs. New Albany on 10/13.

8. Moeller (#9, beat Ignatius 47-7) - An expected beatdown of reeling Ignatius team, Moeller is really rounding into shape after their struggles early in the season. We'll see how far they've come as they head up 71 this weekend to take on St. Edward. The Crusaders seem to go as Jordan Marshall does, and Ed's ability last year to limit his explosive plays was one of the keys to victory. The Eagles have not been as stout this year, so Marshall could turn the tides in this one if he can hit a few homeruns. @ St. Edward on 10/14

9. Elder (#10, beat LCA (VA) 49-7) - Expected blowout of a bad out-of-state "academy" school, so not much to take away. We'll see if Elder's defense can get it together down the stretch to challenge in the R4 playoffs. Good test this week on the road against an undefeated Bishop Chatard squad that played them close in the Pit last year. @ Bishop Chatard (IN) on 10/13

10. Glenville (#8, lost to Hoban 28-16) - A three-loss Glenville probably doesn't deserve the 10 spot, but losses to Avon, IMG and Hoban are nothing to be ashamed of. Only against IMG did they not stand a chance. They were without their QB and several other players against Hoban as the OHSAA continues to investigate their transfers, but still managed to outgain Hoban behind the physical run game of D'Shawntae Jones and Witten at wildcat QB. The big question now is whether their roster gets cleared prior to the playoffs. It shouldn't hurt them against the vast majority of the DIV field, but down the stretch it might. If they don't get cleared or have to forfeit games for using ineligible players then all bets are off. vs. JFK on 10/12

Others: Princeton, Hilliard Bradley, Olentangy Berlin, Olentangy, Cleveland Heights, X, Lakota West, Canton McKinley, Centerville, Withrow, Milford, Youngstown Ursuline, Anderson, Walsh Jesuit, Pick Central

Not a ton of flashy games this week, but these are the top ones:

St. Edward (7-1) v. Moeller (5-3) on 10/14

Elder (5-3) @ Bishop Chatard (IN) (8-0) on 10/13

Walsh Jesuit (7-1) @ Lake Catholic (7-1) on 10/13

St. X (4-4) @ Ignatius (1-7) on 10/14

La Salle (4-4) @ Detroit Catholic Central (MI) (5-2) on 10/13

Medina (5-3) v. Shaker Heights (7-1) on 10/13

Wadsworth (7-1) @ Fort Hill (MD) (5-0) on 10/14. Rare (and somewhat odd) out-of-state matchup for Wadsworth. Know nothing about Fort Hill other than they are undefeated at this point.

Whitmer (6-2) v. Findlay (6-2) on 10/13

Dublin Coffman (6-2) v. Upper Arlington (5-3) on 10/13

In Maryland, Fort Hill is a 1A powerhouse.  Since 2013, Fort Hill has won 7 state championships (including last two years).  Don't know about their style of play, but whatever they do out there in Cumberland, it works really well.  In case you want to know more about Fort Hill, here's a link to a football website.  Fort Hill football

Fort Hill runs a wing-t offense primarily. Which can be difficult to defense if a team has never seen it before. Could be a real challenge for Wadsworth.

A new team in Wadsworth's league isn't illegible for football this season so they had this date open for this year. They contacted several Ohio schools who flatly said No. Fort Hill contacted them over the summer so Wadsworth agreed to make the trip rather than being stuck with an open date.

Bishop Chatard 34 Elder 7 final

Avon 28 Amherst 21 Halftime

What happened to Elder? Their defense was never good but they seemed to be able to score with anyone. Gave them the benefit of the doubt after Moeller, but it looks like they just aren’t the same team anymore.
