Great story but something in it doesn't make sense.  How does one serve 22 years in the Army and then be currently in the National Guard?  Unless he is a 22yr Guardsmen which would make the 1st part of the sentence nonsense.

Shields, who served in the Army for 22 years and currently is in the National Guard, immediately took action.

If he retired he cannot join the NG.  Never heard of anyone serving 22 years then joining the Guard or Reserves.  You can't double dip.  Get retired pay and reserve pay.

Regardless if that was a mistake in reporting.  The story is great and awesome job by that Warrior.

I think you can still join NG after retirement but wouldn’t get pension until not active NG. Dunno why people would do it unless fulltime?

One can’t double dip into the NG but can in a state’s defense force if it’s active. (SDFs can’t be federalized so there’s not an issue)
