BigDrop
It could possibly reach category 5 which is only 5 mph more. And then it stalls with very little movement . Even 24 hours later it is projected to have moved only as far as Naples or Kissimmee and still be 75+ mph. This is almost a category five storm which is truly catastrophic. Even hurricane glass is only designed to withstand up to 150 mph winds. This storm may have gusts exceeding this. Atlanta motor speedway is opened for evacuees. Important: if you are considering evacuating south Florida you should go now. Highways gridlock and stories abound of 24 hours only seeing 100 or so miles travelled when at least 400+ is necessary to leave the state. Houses built after 2000 have metal hurricane shutters-close them. Screws, nails but properly secure your windows and storm doors. I am told hurricane shutters work. Roofs are 1/ strapped to the body of a house and 2/ the actual roof has a thick rubber membrane between the shingles and plywood which is bolted in and should protect the roof up to 150 mph. Required in new construction after 2000. Generally, construction code changed after ‘89 with additional safety improvements in the ‘90’s and 2000’s. I have a close friend in South Florida and he is prepared. A friend in Sarasota will have their shutters up tomorrow as will a brother in Daytona. You must prepare and protect yourself now. There is also the possibility the hurricane could turn north and parallel the coast, touching down in Georgia or South Carolina with catastrophic winds. Prepare now. Good luck! 1
954gator
Yeah we'll see where it goes. My townhouse was built in the 70s and not a scratch on her yet. Gotta love concrete!
954gator
This is the reason I don't worry until about 1 day out. Experts on major media outlets are never sure and tend to "guestimate" total destruction with some record damage. Here's a more realistic prediction at this point. Rufus69
I have NO dislike for South Florida...but I truly hope Dorian visits them first...before turning north and visiting us. Rufus>>
