Sports Academy offering a hold back year for 8th graders

The Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks is doing something that some sports people might say is a sign the apocalypse is near.

This fall, for $35,000, you can participate in a "Personal Development Year." Athletes who are eighth graders can take a "gap year" and not jump right into high school.

The program will allow students to work on their athletics and academics before going into high school.

Not that this is a new idea. There are lots of parents "holding back" their boy or girl trying to make sure they are mature enough for high school. And athletics is certainly in the equation.

It will be interesting to see how many take up the $35,000 offer. It includes athletic and school uniforms and the school day from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

My Grandson was told he should hold back in the 8th grade even though he is an honor student. He was told by a travel league coach that has nothing to do with HS. I advised him to get the grades and take what he can get in baseball. He fortunately agreed. A hold back year might be good for border line students that need another year to mature but not for students/athlete's that are already in advanced academics.

What would you have advised?

Yeah a few PA teams did this back in the 90's where the parents would hold the kid back in middle school one year for "developmental reasons" but I only ever heard it done at public schools and for free.  It was called "grey shirting 8".  What's new is the cost and private school doing it.  It will be a multi million dollar venture in 5 seasons or so I'm sure.

Very, very, very few 14 year olds will significantly benefit from this. Meaning the $35,000 could be easily better spent elsewhere.

No the 14 year old won't significantly benefit but he will when he's 19 as a senior and a year more developed than everyone else on the field.  That's where and when this pays off.
