badrouter
seeing teams in shotgun, with 3 WRs inside the 5 yard line. And now everyone does it...every play. Give me jumbo/power formations down there all day!
HawgGoneIt
It does seem like the jumbo package is being phased out. Spread the defense, get the ball to a little speedster/scat back and he can find a gap.

It's counter-intuitive but this is correct. I'd do it from under center though. No shotgun.

NFL teams are having to teach some QBs to take a snap under center properly 1
badrouter
It's just too easy for the defense to send a fast guy off the edge, completely untouched, to blow the play up in the backfield. 11 hours ago, The Guru said: It's counter-intuitive but this is correct. I'd do it from under center though. No shotgun. The 3 WR look is only a good idea when there is a very real threat for the offense to throw the ball. That's a matter of both the ability of the players on the field AND the likelihood of the playcaller calling a pass. Too often, anyone with any instinct whatsoever, KNOWS there will be a run called. So, they don't actually respect the pass. Inside the 5 yard line, there's just not enough space for the defense to have to cover to make spreading the field a great option. It's hard to throw from that part of the field. The Miami teams from the late 80s and early 90s, as great as they were, struggled to punch it in from goal to go inside the red-zone given they always operated 3WR, 1 back, even though they were under center most of the time. One exception is if the offense is well outside the 5, hits a big play down to inside the 5, and the defensive personnel is poor for stuffing the run. Then, going no-huddle and running out of 3 WR makes sense.
