Tim McCarver always said he was the best he ever caught. He played before  I got here, so I never saw him pitch. RIP.

Old-school intimidating pitcher.  Would as soon hit you as look at you.  1.12 ERA in 1968 is one of those marks that really doesn’t need further explanation.  Forced baseball to lower the mound 6 inches.  The names Koufax and Gibson defined pitching excellence for a generation.

I did not know that.  One would have to be very dominant to have baseball make such a significant change like that.  They changed the strike zone from the armpits down to the letters because of him too.  That is damn impressive.
