FreeBird
On 9/7/2022 at 9:07 PM, I AM IRONMAN said: Future Joe Buck’s St. Joseph (Mont.) coach Dan Marangi summed it up best when he said Friday’s matchup between his Green Knights and Don Bosco Prep will likely be the first of two matchups between the powerhouse programs this season. That’s the nature of North Jersey, Non-Public football, with both teams playing in the uber-competitive United Red Division of the Super Football Conference and are typically on the same side of the bracket once the playoffs begin. In arguably the marquee matchup of the early high school football season in New Jersey, No. 3 St. Joseph (Mont.) travels to Ramsey to take on No. 2 Don Bosco Prep in a matchup between two top-three teams in the NJ.comTop 20 on Friday evening. Friday’s contest will be the sixth meeting between the two school’s since October 2019, supporting Marangi’s thoughts on how things might shake out in November. The start of the playoffs is two months away, and it’s not even close to the thoughts of both teams as bragging rights are at stake on Friday. “They are a veteran team, and they got a lot of guys back,” Marangi said. “I think their o-line is tremendous, and they are well-coached. They are physical at the point of attack. Their running back (Ronnie Heath) is one of the most underrated kids in the state. Their quarterback is mobile. Defensively, they get after you. They create chaos and havoc.” Each team is coming off wild contests. St. Joseph (Mont.) is fresh off a thrilling 36-31 win over DePaul, where the Green Knights had to hang on over the final quarter and a half to come away with the victory. St. Joe’s led 36-10 at one point before DePaul scored the game’s final 21 points, but Marangi said his team made a play when it needed it most, coming away with a turnover to seal the win. Don Bosco Prep made the trek down to Florida, playing one of the top teams in the Orlando area in Edgewater High School. The Ironmen were down 13-10 at halftime before Edgewater’s acclaimed running back, Cedric Baxter Jr., a Texas commit, lived up to his billing and went off in the second half as Don Bosco lost 34-10. Bosco now shifts its attention to a St. Joe’s team that can score points in a hurry. “Joe’s has some explosive playmakers, similar to Edgewater,” Sabella said. “(If) these guys get in space, they can take it the distance.” St. Joseph's (Montvale)'s Head Coach Dan Marangi prays with his team before the start of the football game against Good Counsel at Overpeck Park in Palisades Park on 8/28/21. St. Joseph (Mont.) vs. Don Bosco Prep Kickoff: 7 p.m. at Granatell Stadium Last five games Nov. 14, 2021: Don Bosco 31, St. Joseph (Mont.) 7 (playoff quarterfinals) Oct. 23, 2021: St. Joseph (Mont.) 21, Don Bosco 14 Nov. 6, 2020: St. Joseph (Mont.) 34, Don Bosco 14 Nov. 23, 2019: Don Bosco 10, St. Joseph (Mont.) 8 (playoff semifinals) Oct. 19, 2019: Don Bosco 35, St. Joseph (Mont.) 14 Coaches: Dan Marangi (13-7, third year at St. Joe’s); Dan Sabella (24-19, fifth year at Don Bosco) St. Joseph (Mont.) wins if: It starts fast and keeps the pedal to the metal. Marangi wasn’t pleased with how things went in the second half against DePaul. St. Joe’s was cruising and began making mistakes, letting DePaul into the game. The Green Knights are young in some spots, and that youth has shown up in their first two games. It will go a long way for St. Joe’s to get off to a fast start and sustain it through four quarters. Establishing the run with Willis will also help, with Bosco struggling to contain the run game last weekend. Senior quarterback Luke Henrich is still developing and learning under new offensive coordinator Brian Gibbs and his no-huddle high-tempo offensive style. Don Bosco Prep wins if: It cleans up the defensive mistakes and shores up its run defense. Edgewater back Baxter gave the Ironmen’s defense fits last week, racking up close to 300 yards rushing on the way to a 34-10 win over Don Bosco in Florida. Baxter is one of the best running backs in the country -- a top-50 recruit -- according to 247Sports’ Composite rankings and might be the best Don Bosco faces all season. Willis, though, isn’t too shabby himself, a four-star recruit, according to 247Sports, and is in the conversation as the best running back in New Jersey. Sabella and his defensive coaching staff have to game plan against Willis, who thrived last week in a 36-31 win over DePaul, scoring three touchdowns in St. Joseph (Mont.)’s new up-tempo offense. There were too many defensive breakdowns and mistakes in Don Bosco’s loss to Edgewater last week, and there were some in the second half of Bosco’s 48-28 win in Week 0 over Archbishop Spalding (MD). Don Bosco Prep's Head Coach Dan Sabella watches his team against Seton Hall Prep during the football game at Kelly Athletic Complex on 9/11/21. Players to watch St. Joseph (Mont.) Luke Henrich, Sr., QB: Henrich might still be adjusting to the new offense, but he had a solid game against DePaul last week, throwing for 150 yards and a touchdown. Yasin Willis, Jr., RB: Willis is as good as they come in the backfield, and he has rushed for 260 yards and five touchdowns through two games. John Forster, RB/WR: Forster is used in different ways and is the definition of a home-run hitter with the ball in his hands. See his 98-yard score against DePaul last week as an example. Donovan McKoy, Sr., WR: A big-bodied receiver at 6-foot-5, McKoy is a mismatch outside and will look to use his size and length against Don Bosco’s secondary. Jimmy Mullen, Sr., DL: One of the strongest defensive linemen in the state, Mullen is a veteran on the defense and will look to create havoc on Friday night. Don Bosco Prep Nick Minicucci, Sr., QB: Minicucci is off to a good start this year, throwing for 516 yards and four touchdowns, and is looking to continue his strong play on Friday. Ronnie Heath, Sr., RB: Heath was bottled up a bit last weekend but is still off to a solid start this season, rushing for 194 yards and two touchdowns. Nolan James, So., WR/RB: James was a bright spot in the loss to Edgewater, catching eight passes for 147 yards and a touchdown. Chase Bisontis, Sr., OL: A monster of a player, Bisontis is the anchor of the Ironmen’s offensive line and one of the best left tackles in the country. Jayden Brown, Jr., LB: Brown will have to be active from his linebacker position to try and contain Willis and St. Joe’s running attack.
