Maryland MaxPreps Madness

Over on the local MD board (really just the Montgomery County board with state wide sub boards tacked on since we don't have a statewide MD board anymore) I'm running a simulated 64-team March Madness-style tournament with the top 64 CalPreps/MaxPreps rated teams in the state from 2003-2019. Each school is only allowed to be represented once otherwise there would have been like 8 DeMatha teams in the top 64. I've added stats for each team, notable wins/losses and video highlights where available as well in this thread. Voting is done via Google Form and I'm planning on going one region at a time for the first round over the course of a week or so. I just started the first regional today and voting runs for two days for each first round regional so you're more than welcome to participate. It's a good way for those curious/bored to learn more about MD football and recent MD football history as well as some lesser known teams. For instance I didn't know until doing the stats that in 2015 Bishop McNamara went 6-4 with all 4 losses being to teams ranked in the top 360 and all 6 wins being over top 2,000 teams; two of those losses were by 5 to Top 20 DeMatha and by 6 to Top 100 GC.

Here's the bracket for the curious:

I hear that Fredrick Douglas comes in and kicks the living shit out of the SFA in one of the greatest upsets ever seen. I think it ends up something like 38 - 10 w/ SFA scoring on junk time at end of game!

Straight chalk in the Gilman regional with 25% more votes than the Saint Frances regional. Thought Bullis might have had a chance with Haskins (so did CalPreps) but they were soundly defeated as Suitland had 75% of the vote. Dunbar with Tavon Austin fell just short of an upset of Loyola with 45%.

Here's the Gilman regional 2nd round matchups:

1) 2015 Gilman
8 2005 Gwynn Park

4) 2018 Quince Orchard
5) 2004 Suitland

3) 2012 Middletown
6) 2018 Oakdale

2) 2019 Mount Saint Joseph
7) 2008 Loyola-Blakefield

DeMatha Region (Top Right on Bracket)

1) 2015 DeMatha
16) 2004 Bel Air

8 2017 Walkersville
9) 2018 Georgetown Prep

5) 2004 Potomac
12) 2004 Frederick

4) 2008 Sherwood
13) 2018 North Point

3) 2006 Friendly
14) 2019 Saint Mary's Ryken

6) 2010 Urbana
11) 2009 Huntingtown

7) 2015 John Carroll
10) 2003 South Carroll

2) 2019 McDonogh
15) 2019 Elkton

Voting is now open through 11:59 PM on Friday at this link for the DeMatha regional, match ups and highlight videos hosted on mocofb.com as usual.

Nice region featuring an appearance from the legendary Al Thomas as coach of '08 Sherwood. He won 8 state titles at 3 different schools (5 at Seneca Valley, 2 at Damascus and 1 at Sherwood) and also had a highly successful stint as a college DC in between. 2008 Sherwood was both his last state championship and last season as a HC.

Florida Gators national champion and Browns #7 overall pick safety (and current Steeler) Joe Haden was the QB of 2006 Friendly, he threw for over 7,000 yards in his career.

2010 Urbana had 9 shutouts in 13 games.

2015 John Carroll is the best offensive team you've never seen, beating 2 MIAA A teams on their way to a 12-0 season. QB Kurt Rawlings went on to be a 4-year starter at Yale (upset Harvard as a freshman) and should be in an NFL camp come August.

Straight chalk again in the DeMatha regional with 10% more votes than the Gilman regional. CalPreps says we'd have seen quite a few first round instant classics though. 2018 Georgetown Prep came closest to an upset with 41% of the vote.

Here's the DeMatha regional 2nd round matchups:

1) 2015 DeMatha
8 2017 Walkersville

4) 2008 Sherwood
5) 2004 Potomac

3) 2006 Friendly
6) 2010 Urbana

2) 2019 McDonogh
7) 2015 John Carroll

1) 2019 Good Counsel
16) 2009 Eastern Tech

8 2004 Henry E. Lackey
9) 2006 Edmondson-Westside

5) 2013 Eastern Christian
12) 2006 Broadneck

4) 2004 Northwest
13) 2008 Westlake

3) 2017 Dr. Henry A. Wise
14) 2007 Arundel

6) 2013 Franklin
11) 2012 Westminster

7) 2003 Aberdeen
10) 2011 Atholton

2) 2009 Linganore
15) 2003 Eleanor Roosevelt

Voting is now open through 11:59 PM on Sunday at this link for the Good Counsel regional, the final region of the first round, match ups above and highlights to be found on mocofb.com again.

Notable teams here include 2006 Edmondson-Westside, the only Baltimore City Public School to win a state title at a classification higher than 1A .

2013 Eastern Christian, who most people on the national board are pretty familiar with despite them only existing for 4 years with David Sills V who is now on the Giants roster as a WR.

2017 Wise is the only public school to ever defeat an MIAA A or WCAC school with a winning record. To give an idea of how impressive this is, 6-seed 2013 3A State Champion Franklin lost to a 3-8 Calvert Hall (ranked #3041 nationally) by 2 TDs. Calvert Hall lost to MIAA A champion McDonogh 48-13 after trailing 41-0 at the half.

2012 Westminster was a missed FG away from the 4A championship game led by QB Deryk Kern who threw a state-record 63 TD passes in 13 games. Westminster also gave WV AAA champ Martinsburg (WV) their first loss in 32 games during the regular season.

This is a good underdog region. I personally think the 9, 10 and 11 seeds can hang with their opponents.

Saint Frances Regional 2nd Round:

1) 2019 Saint Frances
8 2014 Frederick Douglass (Prince George's)

4) 2011 Calvert Hall
5) 2012 River Hill

3) 2005 Damascus
6) 2011 Old Mill

2) 2016 Archbishop Spalding
10) 2004 Charles H. Flowers

Voting is now open through 11:59 PM on Tuesday at this link for the second round of the Saint Frances regional, stats and highlights can be found here.

The 4-5 matchup between '11 Calvert Hall and '12 River Hill should be a good one. Both teams produced multiple NFL draft picks and scores of FBS players in the late-2000s and early-2010s.

River Hill was stuck playing in a county that allowed no OOC games and the way the playoffs shook out their region was also all county schools so you never really got a gauge of how good they were because 12 of 14 games were against teams that only played each other. They only ever played non-county schools in the state semis and state championship.

Several upsets in the Sweet 16. Damascus, Oakdale, Urbana and Linganore all won against the (CalPreps) spread, defeating Archbishop Spalding, Mount Saint Joseph, McDonogh and Wise respectively. Four public schools made it into the Elite 8. Oakdale, Urbana and Linganore are within about a 15-minute drive of each other. Damascus is another maybe 20-30 minutes from those three schools. Of the teams in the Elite 8, the only one I didn't see play (either live or in the case of the 2019 teams watched at least one full game online) is 2005 Damascus.

Moving on to the Elite 8:

1) 2019 Saint Frances (-41)
3) 2005 Damascus

1) 2015 Gilman (-19)
6) 2018 Oakdale

1) 2015 DeMatha (-32)
6) 2010 Urbana

1) 2019 Good Counsel (-28)
2) 2009 Linganore

In the post above this you can find the Elite 8 teams complete with stats, highlights/full games (except '05 Damascus, couldn't find any film on them) and notable players for each team. All matchups are on one ballot again. Voting will run through 11:59 PM on Saturday. You can vote at this link.

Impressive.
